Assistant track coach heads to Australia to compete in Olympics

It may seem odd that assistant Sac State cross country and track and field coach Mike Gipson is taking a long a trip in the middle of the cross country season.

It might, until you realize that Gipson is headed to Sydney, Australia to help fellow Hornet track coach Yvonne Kanazawa Scott in her bid for Olympic gold.

Scott coaches hurdles for the Hornets and it is the hurdles, specifically the 100 meter hurdles, that she will be competing in for her native country of Japan.

Gipson is confident that his colleague and apprentice will fare better than in her first Olympic experience when she failed to get out of the first round at Atlanta in 1996.
