Mexican Independence Day celebrates unity

Live music and enthusiastic people were present at Joe Serna Jr. Plaza Thursday night to celebrate Mexican Independence Day at the event titled, “Celebrando Nuestra Cultura.”

The event was sponsored by Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity, Mujeres Ayandando La Raza and UNIQUE programs.

The organizers worked since June to put the music event together.

“The coordinators worked hard together. Everything seemed to fall into place,” said Eujenia Soto, event coordinator of the event and a member from the Mujeres Ayundando La Raza.

Rondalla Sentimiento Romantico, an eight-member band from Woodland, performed several Mexican ballads.

“The ballads sung tonight are from the 1940s,” said Juan Flores, a student in counseling and a member of the Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity. “My mother used to sing these love ballads to me.”

Grupo Gitamo, an alternative/Spanish rock group from the Bay Area also rocked the stage. “This is very rewarding,” .said Noe Vargas, a graduate student and a member of the Nu Alpha Kappa Fraternity. “We had a good turnout. The coordinators would like to thank UNIQUE program and ASI for promoting the Mexican culture and Mexican Independence Day to Sacramento State.”
