Nearly 100 candidates are running in this fall’s University of Massachusetts Student Government Association election, which will take place Monday and Tuesday. The ballot includes 50 candidates seeking senate seats, 44 applying for spots in local House Councils and one running for a lieutenant governor position.

Some 22 individuals from six residential zones will add “students for a democratic voice” to their names in a move they think will lead to more effective governance that better reflects students’ thoughts.

For a day that was over four years in the making, Sunday’s 250th Anniversary parade marched on through adverse weather conditions, attracting over 1,000 people from Amherst and surrounding towns.

Amherst’s 250th celebration anniversary got off to a great start Sunday afternoon with an old-fashioned parade starting from Amherst College and ending at UMass’s Haigis Hall. Even with temperatures in the 60s and a steady flow of rain, spectators lined both sides of North Pleasant Street and Massachusetts Avenue to catch a glimpse of town history in the making.

The era of nuclear warfare began on Aug. 6, 1945 with the bombing of Hiroshima, Japan. This past Thursday was the first meeting of the University of Massachusetts chapter of Global Zero – a non-profit institution aimed at eliminating nuclear weapons by 2030. Eunkyo Choi, an international student from South Korea, is heading the UMass section of Global Zero. The launch coincided with similar meetings at 13 other schools this past Thursday.
