Minutemen use strengths in victory over Pride

UMass relied on its strong defense and goalie Tim McCormack to lift then to their upset over No. 6 Hofstra. The Minutemen, who led the CAA in caused turnovers and ground balls, used the two to help its offense in the win.

Plourde, Sanders hold George Washington hitless in doubleheader

Pitchers Sara Plourde and Bailey Sanders combined Sunday to throw a perfect game against the Colonials, and Plourde followed with a no-hitter in Game 2 of the day. The Minutewomen won both matches by the run-rule, taking Game 1 17-0 and Game 2 by a score of 11-0.

UMass opens A-10 schedule with pair of wins

The Minutewomen were led by Jesse O’Donnell this weekend, as she netted two hat tricks in a weekend sweep at Richmond and George Washington. UMass’ win over the Spiders was its first ever at Richmond since the two teams starting playing in 2002.

UMass takes one of three from St. Joe’s as conference play begins

Despite two complete games from UMass’ pitching staff, the Minutemen took the final game of a three-game series with the Hawks over the weekend. After losing two close games in a doubleheader on Saturday, the UMass offense awoke on Sunday to lift the team to victory.

Underwood finds ‘Temporary Home’ at Mullins Center

Carrie Underwood performed this weekend at the Mullins Center. The concert featured multiple fabulous outfit changes and a slideshow of personal childhood photos of the singer and her mother when she sang a tribute to the woman who raised her.

Board of Health changes reach of proposed smoking ordinance

Although Thursday’s Board of Health meeting did not end in a vote, it did alter the contours of the town of Amherst’s proposed smoking ordinance.

UMass seeks new president

The University of Massachusetts system is looking for a new president. In the wake of current President Jack Wilson’s March 1 announcement that he would step down effective June 2011, the University announced Thursday that it has formed a Committee to search for the system’s next president.
