Plourde on pace to break Henderson’s strikeout mark

In Game 1 of yesterday’s double-header with Rhode Island, sophomore pitcher Sara Plourde recorded nine strikeouts in six innings of work. Plourde became the third Minutewomen all-time to hit the career 500-strikeout mark and passed alum Danielle Henderson’s 1998 strikeout total of 430. Plourde is also 25 strikeouts away from reaching Henderson’s all-time mark of 465, which she set in 1999.

Three Minutemen earn Atlantic 10 honors

For the first time in the history of the Massachusetts baseball program, three players swept weekly Atlantic 10 awards. Senior Bryan Leigh earned Conference Pitcher of the Week, junior Eric Fredette was awarded Player of the Week, while freshman Ryan Cusick received Rookie of the Week. UMass went 3-2 on the week and earning its third-straight series victory over a conference opponent in Saint Louis.

Charlotte continues to lead Atlantic 10

The Charlotte baseball team sits atop the Atlantic 10 standings, averaging nearly 10 runs per game and being the only team in the conference to be nationally ranked at No. 156. Junior Ryan Rivers leads the potent 49ers offense with a .397 average, 11 home runs, and 50 runs batted in. Rivers is just one of seven players on Charlotte with at least a .300 batting average.

Towson clinches CAA regular season title

With its 10-9 victory over Penn State on Saturday afternoon, the Towson men’s lacrosse team earned the Colonial Athletic Association regular season title. The Tigers are ranked 11th overall in the latest United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Division I Poll, the highest the team has been ranked since they were ranked 11th on March 5, 2007.

‘Kick-Ass’ takes names

Adapted from the comic book of the same title, “Kick-Ass” is the story of a young man who, fed up with the indifference and apathy that the citizens of his city show towards the crime that runs rampant, decides to create a costumed alter-ego and bring some vigilante justice to the streets of New York. There is one problem, however: the newly-minted super hero Kick-Ass has no powers. He has no radioactive blood, no training, no special equipment and no clue about the realities of the criminal underworld.

A dozen people were hospitalized and treated for severe intoxication after becoming ill during an on-campus dance party Saturday night into Sunday morning, according to campus officials.
