UVM tops Eagles for first win of the year, Terriers play to two draws

The Vermont hockey team knocked off Boston College, 5-3, and earned its first victory of the season.
The Catamounts entered Saturday’s game with a 0-4-3 record.

UVM took the early lead on a first period goal by Chris McCarthy. Eagles forward Cam Atkinson answered with a goal of his own to tie the game at one. Sebastian Stalberg finished off the first period scoring his first goal of the season to give Vermont a 2-1 lead.

The second period was all about the goalkeepers. Vermont’s Rob Madore stopped 14 shots while Boston College’s Parker Milner had six saves in the period. Both goalies shut out the opposition during the period.

Contrary to the second period, both teams found the back of the net with ease in the final period. UVM quickly provided themselves with a comfortable 4-1 lead thanks to goals by H.T. Lenz and Connor Brickley.

However, with 12 minutes left, the Eagles cut the lead back down to one. Both goals came from junior Jimmy Hayes, but they weren’t enough. With 34 seconds remaining Tobias Nilsson-Roos notched an empty net goal to ensure the Catamounts victory.

Nilsson-Roos, Stalberg and Brinkley all contributed a goal and an assist. Madore finished the game with 34 saves and also assisted on Nilsson-Roos’ goal.

Vermont (1-4-3, 1-3-2 Hockey East) faces off against Massachusetts, while Boston College (6-4-0, 4-3-0 HEA) plays host to Maine.

BU salvages 2 ties

Boston University, the top ranked team in the nation, battled Merrimack this weekend for a pair of ties, 1-1 and 3-3, respectively.

The Terriers kicked off the weekend with a 1-1 tie on Friday.

BU took a 1-0 lead thanks to Ross Gaudet only to see that lead erased one minute later by Merrimack’s Mike Collins. Sahir Gill and Adam Clendening assisted on Gaudet’s score, while Shawn Bates and Rhett Bly set up Collins.

Both goalies did everything in their power to keep their teams in contention.

BU’s Kieran Millan made 35 saves and Merrimack’s Joe Cannata stopped 32 shots.

One night later, BU rallied in the third period to salvage their second tie against the Warriors.

The Terriers fell behind 3-1 after two periods, but Chris Connolly provided the team with some late game heroics.

Connolly scored the first goal of the 3rd period to cut the deficit to one goal and then set up Corey Trivino for the game-tying goal. Wade Megan scored BU’s first goal of the night and Alex Chiasson assisted on the final two goals.

Collins scored his second goal of the weekend for Merrimack and Karl Stollery finished the game with two assists

Boston University, the defending national champions, are undefeated this season, but have tied their last three contests.

Maine sweeps Northeastern

Maine used two improbable rallies to beat Northeastern 4-2 twice this weekend.

The Black Bears’ big weekend started Friday night when Spencer Abbott, Joey Diamond and Gustav Nyquist scored three unanswered goals to escape with the victory. The Huskies led the game 2-1 late in the second period before Abbott scored to tie the game 2-2 before the final period.

One night later, Maine repeated their previous performance in impressive fashion.

This time the third period began with the Black Bears trailing 2-1. However, Diamond netted his second goal of the weekend to equalize the score at two. Diamond’s goal was followed up by the game-winner by Ryan Hegarty and the insurance goal by Klas Leidermark.

Maine goalie Dan Sullivan was in the net during both victories and stopped 17 shots in each game.

The Black Bears (6-1-3, 4-0-1 HEA) travel to play Boston College this week, while the Huskies (1-7-2, 1-4-1 HEA) are on the road versus Providence
