Northampton man on probation for possession of 30 pounds of marijuana

While the United States Postal Service promises that “neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night” will prevent postal workers from delivering, it is best to properly wrap a package.

A Northampton man learned this lesson the hard way. On Thursday, Jan. 26, John J. Smith of 127 Bridge St. pleaded guilty to the charge of possession of marijuana with intent to distribute.

On Oct. 31, 2011, police received a tip from postal workers that a package addressed to Smith contained marijuana. According to court documents, as reported by Bob Dunn of the Daily Hampshire Gazette, the package “was so poorly taped and packed,” it opened showing five clear bags filled with marijuana.

Officers of the Northampton Police Department searched Smith’s home and found the package, and an additional 30 pounds of marijuana, several mailing packages and a pair of scales, according to the Gazette.

Smith told the officers he was regularly buying marijuana from California and having it shipped to his Northampton home. He additionally told the officers that he paid $2,500 per pound and sold it to a group of eight to 10 customers at a $1,000 markup, reported the Gazette.

The 58-year-old was placed on probation for three years, on Thursday, Jan. 26.
