Car crash on campus results in minor damage

Two University of Massachusetts students went for a wild ride down Fearing Street last Thursday night that ended when they crashed into the corner of Patterson Hall in Southwest Residential Area.

Both the driver, Dat Duc Nguyen, a sophomore at UMass, and the passenger refused medical treatment, according to Deputy Chief of Police Patrick Archbald. The car, a four-door sedan, was “absolutely” totaled.

The accident is still under investigation. However, Archbald said there was lawn damage and some brick damage that he expects the University to seek restitution for.

“We will be looking at a number of charges, potentially,” said Archbald.

Nguyen was driving his car south down Sunset Avenue when he came to a stop sign and struck the curb while taking a right hand turn onto Fearing street, according to Archbald.

Frustrated and upset about hitting the curve, he began to yell, and instead of hitting the breaks he hit the accelerator, which, combined with the force of hitting the curve, caused the car to spin around 180 degrees,” said Archald.

The vehicle the hit the curb again and proceeded over the sidewalk, over the grass and then became airborne before it collided with the building head on at approximately 11:45 p.m., said Archbald.

The driver was not intoxicated, according to Archbald.
