The Northeastern hockey team received goals from three of its freshmen to pull off a 3-1 win over top-ranked defending champion Boston College on Saturday.

The Huskies (2-0-0, 2-0-0 Hockey East) were quick to score with a goal from freshman forward Ryan Belonger, assisted by Cam Darcy and Joseph Manno five minutes, three seconds into the game.

Freshman Kevin Roy drilled the puck into the net shortly after, making the score 2-0.

Pat Mullane gained possession for the Eagles (0-1) after a charging penalty was called on Dan Cornell. The puck went from Mullane to John Gaudreau who found Steven Whitney on the left dot. Whitney scored for BC, making the score 2-1 by the end of the first period.

The second period was ruled by the dominance of each team’s goaltenders. Parker Milner finished with 26 saves for the Eagles, 12 coming in the second period alone. Chris Rawlings had 31 saves for the Huskies.

Northeastern defender Colton Saucerman added an insurance goal in the third period.

Hohmann lifts Terriers

With two imperative goals in the second period, the Boston University beat Providence, 4-2, in its season opener on Saturday.

Cason Hohmann proved to be the star of the game, as he ended with two assists and scored the game-winning goal for the Terriers

Matt O’Connor stopped 26 shots, 10 of which came in the second period. The Terriers (1-0-0, 1-0-0) also outshot Providence, 34-28. Friars’ goalie Jon Gilles blocked a total of 30 shots.

Senior defender Ryan Ruikka gave BU its first goal seven minutes, 52 seconds   into play.

The Friars (1-1-0, 0-1-0) did not let the Terriers stay ahead for long. Shortly after Ruikka’s goal, Providence retaliated when sophomore Ross Mauermann sent a shot passed O’Connor.

Providence forward Paul de Jersey also contributed with a goal assisted by Chris Rooney and Alex Velischek.

Both Garrett Noonan and Hohmann scored for BU to make the score 3-2 midway through the second period.

The Terriers increased its advantage in the third period when Ben Rosen lined one into the net.

BU will be back on the ice at New Hampshire on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Vermont salvages tie

After remaining scoreless for a majority of the game, Vermont salvaged a 1-1 tie against UMass-Lowell in overtime.

Vermont was much more aggressive throughout the game, as the team had 29 shots on goal, compared to UMass-Lowell’s 39 and totaled four penalties and five power plays.

The River Hawks (0-0-1) took the 1-0 lead in the 17th minute when junior Josh Holmstrom found an opportunity to score off a pass from Michael Fallon.

Goaltender Doug Carr’s 28 saves helped to keep Vermont scoreless well into the third period.

Eleven minutes, 17 seconds into the third period, forward Colin Markison lined the puck into the net to even the score at one apiece. Matt White and Michael Paliotta were credited with assists on the play. Neither teamed scored in overtime.

Vermont allowed one shot on two Lowell power plays and had six players make their collegiate debuts on Friday.

The Catamounts will face off against Merrimack on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
