LSU takes down South Carolina, Notre Dame tops Stanford

The No. 9 Louisiana State football team added an impressive win to its resume, upsetting No. 3 South Carolina, 23-21, on Saturday night in Baton Rouge, La.

The Tigers (6-1, 2-1 Southeastern Conference) offense was led by freshman running back Jeremy Hill, who rushed for 124 yards and two touchdowns on the night, highlighted with a 50-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

It was the Gamecocks’ first loss of the season, pushing their record to 6-1 and 4-1 in the SEC.

Coming off its loss to Florida last week, LSU was able to run their offense as they wished, gaining a total of 406 yards compared to South Carolina, which only gathered 211 yards. The Tigers defense was also a main contributor to the victory, intercepting Gamecocks quarterback Connor Shaw twice, and sacking him four times.

LSU faces another ranked opponent this Saturday afternoon when it travels to No. 18 Texas A&M. South Carolina looks to get back on track on Saturday afternoon when it faces red-hot No. 2 Florida on the road in a clash of top 10 teams.

Notre Dame takes down Stanford

A goal-line stand in overtime gave No. 7 Notre Dame a 20-13 victory over No. 17 Stanford in South Bend, Ind., on Saturday afternoon.

On the final Cardinal (4-2, 2-1 Pac-12) possession in overtime, their offense got all the way down to the Fighting Irish 1-yard line, but were unable to cash in after three rushing attempts by running back Stepfan Taylor were stopped by the Notre Dame (6-0) defense.

The game did not end there as Taylor’s fourth-down run was reviewed after it seemed as though he had crossed the goal-line for a touchdown. The replay officials determined, however, that the referees’ whistles had blown the play dead before Taylor crossed the plain.

Notre Dame took the lead in the extra frame when backup quarterback Tommy Rees connected with T.J. Jones on a 7-yard score.

The Fighting Irish pushed the game to overtime on a game-tying 22-yard field goal by Kyle Brindza with 20 seconds left in regulation.

Notre Dame looks to remain unbeaten when it welcomes Brigham Young to Notre Dame Stadium on Saturday afternoon. Stanford is also in action on Saturday when it travels to play Pac-12 rival California in a crucial conference matchup.

Oklahoma destroys Texas

The Red River Rivalry didn’t prove to be much of a contest as No. 13 Oklahoma dismantled No. 15 Texas, 63-21, on Saturday.

Sooners quarterback Landry Jones racked up 321 yards through the air and two touchdowns along with an interception. Backup quarterback Blake Bell was also effective in his play, rushing for 31 yards and four touchdowns in the game.

The Oklahoma offense, led by Jones and running back Damien Williams, tore the Texas defense to pieces, tallying 677 total yards, including 334 passing yards between Jones and Bell. Williams ran for 167 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries, with a 95-yard touchdown run providing the exclamation point on his performance.

While this was a game to forget for the Longhorns, one of the very few highlights was the effort by junior quarterback Case McCoy, who threw for 102 yards and two touchdowns after replacing injured quarterback David Ash in the fourth quarter.

Oklahoma’s next game is Saturday night at 7 p.m. when Kansas visits Oklahoma at Memorial Stadium, while Texas looks to rebound at home versus Baylor on Saturday night.
