Senior Torin Varn scored in overtime to lead the Hofstra men’s lacrosse team to a thrilling 9-8 win over Georgetown on Saturday afternoon.

With 20 seconds left on in the extra session, Varn fired a shot from 11 yards out past Hoyas goalkeeper Jake Haley for his fifth goal of the season, giving the Pride the overtime victory.

Georgetown (2-2) opened up the scoring early in the first quarter off one of Devon Lewis’ two goals. It was all Hofstra (2-2) from there, as it scored six unanswered goals, including a hat trick from freshman Brier Davis.

Davis scored all three of his goals in the second quarter to extend the Pride lead to 6-1. Sam Lilnares added a goal and two assists while senior Drew Coholan also added a goal along with one assist.

The Hoyas scored seven of the next eight goals to take an 8-7 lead with 7:40 left to play in the final period. Hofstra junior Mike Malave scored with just over a minute left to play, tying the game and sending it into overtime. That’s when Varn put the game away with his last second overtime goal off a Ryan Rielly pass.

Bo Stafford, who had two goals and an assist, led Georgetown. Reilly O’Connor and Devon Lewis each helped out with two goals apiece, while Haley made eight saves in the losing effort.

Penn State captures Creator Trophy

In a battle of nationally ranked teams, ninth-ranked Penn State used six first half goals to defeat No. 19 Ohio State 11-8 at Ohio State Stadium, capturing its second straight Creator Trophy.

Penn State (3-1) won its 14th straight road game, led by NCAA Division I scoring leader Shane Sturgis and Kyle VanThof. Sturgis, who came into the game averaging six points per game and 4.67 goals per game, scored four goals and chipped in an assist to guide the PSU attack. It was his fourth game of five or more points. He has 18 goals and 23 points on the young season.

VanThof finished with five points on three goals and two assists.

Penn State turned a 2-1 deficit to a 7-2 avantage with a 6-0 run. OSU (1-3) responded with three unanswered goals to cut the Nittany Lion lead to 7-5.

VanThof extended the PSU lead to 9-6 with his fifth of the season and completed the hat trick to push its lead to 10-7.

Underclassmen lead Delaware

The underclassmen stole the show for Delaware, as it defeated Villanova 11-8 for its third win of the year.

Eight of the Blue Hens’ eleven goals came from freshmen and sophomores.

Delaware (3-2) jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead that it wouldn’t relinquish. Freshman Logan Aunon posted his second straight hat trick with three goals and sophomore Connor Frisina scored twice. Freshman Jackson Finigan chipped in with a goal and three assists to lead the Blue Hens attack.

The Wildcats (1-2) scored four of the next five goals to tie it at 5-5. But two unanswered goals before the half gave the Delaware a two-goal lead after 30 minutes of play.

The Blue Hens took control with a four-goal spurt in a span of just three minutes in the third quarter to take an 11-6 lead into the final frame.

But Villanova didn’t go down without a fight, mounting a mini rally with two goals in the final quarter, but came up short due to Delaware sophomore goalie Conor Peaks’ 16-save effort.
