Former Massachusetts softball standout Quianna Diaz-Patterson is following up her historic 2015 senior season with a spot on the Puerto Rican national team this summer.

The shortstop will participate in various international competitions over the next few months after being named to the team Monday afternoon.

An Amherst native with Puerto Rican descent, Diaz-Patterson earned a spot on the national team following a few weeks playing for a Puerto Rican semi-pro team and participating in subsequent tryouts.

Diaz-Patterson will get her first taste of international competition in the 2015 World Cup of Softball, held in Irvine, California from June 29-July 6. The Puerto Rican team will also participate in the Canada Cup held in British Columbia (July 7-13) and the Pan Am Games in Toronto (July 19-26).

Diaz-Patterson finished her UMass tenure with a record-breaking senior season, batting .504 (fourth in the nation) with nine home runs and a .592 on-base percentage. Her batting average and on-base percentage marks were both Minutewomen and Atlantic 10 single-season records.

In total, Diaz-Patterson left UMass as the program’s third-best all-time hitter with a .381 career batting average and finished sixth in hits (212). The durable shortstop did this while starting all 176 games of her four-year career.

For her efforts this past season, Diaz-Patterson was named to the All-A-10 team and was most recently named Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference Division I softball player of the year last Wednesday.
