Wellman foregoes final two years, signs with NHL’s Wild

Within a week of UMass’ season ending, Casey Wellman was back on the ice with a new jersey. The sophomore signed a free-agent contract with the Minnesota Wild, recording an assist in his first two games as a professional.

UMass’ season ends in first round of Hockey East tournament

Despite winning the last two games of the regular season to make the Hockey East tournament, the Minutemen fell in the first two games of its best-of-three series with Boston College in the opening round. The two losses gave UMass a 0-5 record on the season against the Eagles.

Minutemen face Richmond in second round

The Massachusetts men’s basketball team will play third-seeded Richmond in Atlantic City after upsetting sixth-seeded Charlotte on Tuesday night. The Minutemen will attempt to upset another team in the Spiders who already appear to have a spot in the upcoming NCAA tournament.

Rally carries Minutemen over Great Danes

After falling behind 4-1 early to Albany, the Massachusetts men’s lacrosse team used a 10-2 run to end the game, and came away with an 11-6 win Tuesday afternoon at Garber Field.

Minutemen look to end A-10 Tournament woes

Not since 2002 has UMass won a game in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, but it hopes to end that streak when they play at Charlotte Tuesday night in the opening round of the tournament. The 49ers beat the Minutemen, 72-58, earlier this season in Amherst.

Marnie Dacko out as women’s basketball coach

After eight seasons at the helm of the Minutewomen, coach Marnie Dacko will not return to the team next season. UMass Athletic Director John McCutcheon announced Monday afternoon that her contract would not be extended after its expiration on April 10.

Last-second shot launches UMass into A-10 Tournament

With their fate in their own hands, the Massachusetts men’s basketball team came through with a big win over Rhode Island on senior night to earn a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Tied at 67, senior Ricky Harris drove into the paint before hitting a shot with three seconds remaining to give the Minutemen the victory.

Minutemen focusing on this weekend, not HE tournament

Just one month ago, UMass sat at the top of the Hockey East standings. Now, they are in ninth place, vying for a way into the conference tournament. While the Minutemen cannot claim a fourth-seed, but can get the sixth seed with a sweep of the Black Bears this weekend, while getting help from other teams.

Minutemen drop out of playoff picture with loss to No. 7 Eagles

While UMass put together a better performance than it had over the past couple of weeks, it still wasn’t enough as it fell to Boston College, 2-1, in overtime. The loss, coupled with two wins by Vermont, currently has the Minutemen in ninth place and out of the Hockey East playoff picture.
