Harris leading UMass to tournament in rebuilding year

Despite bringing in five freshmen and having a rebuilding year, the Massachusetts men’s basketball team won its first Atlantic 10 tournament game since 2002 behind Ricky Harris. The senior has led the Minutemen all season and continues to perform well in the playoffs, not wanting to play his last game in a UMass uniform.

The Massachusetts men’s basketball team will play third-seeded Richmond in Atlantic City after upsetting sixth-seeded Charlotte on Tuesday night. The Minutemen will attempt to upset another team in the Spiders who already appear to have a spot in the upcoming NCAA tournament.

Not since 2002 has UMass won a game in the Atlantic 10 Tournament, but it hopes to end that streak when they play at Charlotte Tuesday night in the opening round of the tournament. The 49ers beat the Minutemen, 72-58, earlier this season in Amherst.

With one of the most competitive Atlantic 10 regular seasons in recent memory now in the past, the 12 qualifying teams will open up the A-10 Tournament on Tuesday in hopes of earning an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

After eight seasons at the helm of the Minutewomen, coach Marnie Dacko will not return to the team next season. UMass Athletic Director John McCutcheon announced Monday afternoon that her contract would not be extended after its expiration on April 10.

With their fate in their own hands, the Massachusetts men’s basketball team came through with a big win over Rhode Island on senior night to earn a spot in the Atlantic 10 Tournament. Tied at 67, senior Ricky Harris drove into the paint before hitting a shot with three seconds remaining to give the Minutemen the victory.

Minutewomen fall in A-10 tournament to Richmond

Though the Massachusetts women’s basketball team stifled the Atlantic 10’s leading scorer Brittani Shells to nine points, they couldn’t conjure up enough offense to defeat Richmond. The Minutewomen got knocked out of the postseason with a 54-47 opening round loss to the Spiders, who pulled down 20 offensive rebounds.

Senior Ricky Harris was honored prior to the game against Rhode Island on senior night and propelled the Massachusetts men’s basketball team to a win to earn a spot in the Atlantic 10 tournament. Harris passed Lou Roe to move to third in career-scoring for the Minutemen with 1,917 points.

Despite 31 points from Ricky Harris, the Massachusetts men's basketball team lost to La Salle, 89-78. The loss gives UMass its fourth straight of the season.
