Pitcher Sara Plourde broke Danielle Henderson’s record of 465 strikeouts on Wednesday as UMass took a 3-1 decision over Boston College. The sophomore finished the game with nine strikeouts.

For the second time this season, the No. 21 Massachusetts softball team will face Boston College on Wednesday night. In their first meeting on April 6, the Minutewomen shut out the Eagles, 6-0, as starting pitcher Sara Plourde allowed only one hit, nearly completi the no-hit bid.

Pitcher Jen Mineau pitched four strong innings, giving up one hit and striking out four, as the Fordham Rams defeated the Iona Gaels 6-0. The Temple Owls defeated GW in a double-header anchored by pitcher Kristen Marris, giving up a combined three hits in two games.

Some Minutewomen fans have heard shortstop Whitney Williams singing at UMass’ home games. Williams, a senior for the Minutewomen, hopes to pursue her musical career after she hangs up the cleats. Williams has been singing since she was four-years-old, and hopes to try out for “American Idol.”

Minutewomen sweep URI in doubleheader

Despite the weather, the Massachusetts softball team played its double-header against Rhode Island on Tuesday, and played well. The Minutewomen swept the Rams, winning both games, 9-2, and 3-1 to move their record to 31-7-1 on the season. The Minutewomen were led in Game 1 by Sarah Reeves, who recorded two singles, one double, one run batted in, a stolen base, and two runs scored, while Katie Bettencourt went 3-for-3, including a two-run home run and three RBIs.

Plourde on pace to break Henderson’s strikeout mark

In Game 1 of yesterday’s double-header with Rhode Island, sophomore pitcher Sara Plourde recorded nine strikeouts in six innings of work. Plourde became the third Minutewomen all-time to hit the career 500-strikeout mark and passed alum Danielle Henderson’s 1998 strikeout total of 430. Plourde is also 25 strikeouts away from reaching Henderson’s all-time mark of 465, which she set in 1999.

After a no-hitter by Sarah Plourde, the Minutewomen hit the road with games against the Billikens this weekend. UMass has not been swept in A-10 play since 2005, and have lost just two conference games in three seasons.

Even with strong pitching and impressive hitting, UMass’ defense has stood tall so far this season. The Minutewomen have three players with a fielding percentage of 1.000, while UMass has the fewest errors in the NCAA, with 17.

Behind decisive pitching from Sarah Plourde, the Minutewomen defeated the Bobcats 6-0 Tuesday afternoon. Plourde threw her fifth no-hitter of the season and sixth of her career. UMass takes on the Billikens this coming weekend.

The Minutewomen received two home runs from junior Meghan Carta and a two-hit shut-out from pitcher Sara Plourde to beat the Huskies in dominating fashion.
