Timely hitting and strikeouts spurring Minutewomen

Though the Massachusetts softball team didn’t look its best on offense this past weekend against Charlotte, it did string together hits to earn victories. On the pitching side, sophomore Sara Plourde is leading the way for UMass in the circle. Plourde has recorded a 0.96 earned run average, while racking up a nation’s best 367 strikeouts.

Behind Katie Bettencourt’s two-run home run and two runs scored and Sara Plourde’s fourth complete game no-hitter on the season, the Minutewomen topped Charlotte 3-0 on Friday. The two schools will square off again Saturday at noon in Game 2 of the weekend set.

Although the game didn’t go the way Massachusetts softball coach Elaine Sortino and pitcher Sara Plourde would’ve liked, but the Minutewomen got a 6-0 win anyway. The sophomore had a no-hitter until the last out of the seventh inning.

The Massachusetts softball team travels to face Boston College as it attempts to continue its six-game winning streak. The Minutewomen are coming off back-to-back wins against Fordham, while the Eagles fell to North Carolina State in a three-game series this past weekend. UMass will rely on its surging offense which boasts six batters with a .500 slugging percentage or better.

After spending the first six weeks of the season playing games on the road and at neutral fields, the Massachusetts softball team returns to the Northeast today when it hosts Dartmouth in a doubleheader. In their last meeting, the Minutewomen shut out the Big Green twice and scored 28 runs in their two-game series back in March, 2006.

Minutewomen finally able to practice outside

Though the Massachusetts softball team has done well this season and won both its Atlantic 10 games, UMass coach Elaine Sortino feels there is room for improvement. Part of the reason why Sortino feels the Minutewomen haven’t done as well as they can is because they’ve only recently begun to practice outdoors. Practicing inside has limited work on base running and outfield play, which was improved in UMass’ recent wins after practicing outside.

Plourde, Sanders hold George Washington hitless in doubleheader

Pitchers Sara Plourde and Bailey Sanders combined Sunday to throw a perfect game against the Colonials, and Plourde followed with a no-hitter in Game 2 of the day. The Minutewomen won both matches by the run-rule, taking Game 1 17-0 and Game 2 by a score of 11-0.

Sara Plourde showed she could be a strong pitcher last year as a freshman, but in her sophomore season she has exceeded even those expectations. The sophomore currently is 14-3 on the year and leads the country with 236 strikeouts.

With a 15-7 record so far this season against stiff competition, UMass still looks to improve as it begins it conference schedule on Sunday. The Minutewomen will travel to George Washington for a pair of games before laying its home opener next Tuesday.

Minutewomen fall to Long Island on final day of San Diego Classic II

The Massachusetts softball team fell to Long Island, 2-0, on the final day of the San Diego Classic II. Against Texas A&M in Game 1, Sara Plourde struck out 22 batters to break former starter Brandice Balschmitter’s previous record of 19 strikeouts. For the classic, the Minutewomen went 4-3 and improved their record to 15-7 for the season.

Behind strong pitching, the Massachusetts softball team went 5-0 over the weekend and was the only team to go undefeated at the University of South Florida Under Armour Invitational. The Minutewomen allowed a total of eight runs in the five games, including two 3-0 shutouts against Tennessee-Chattanooga and Virginia Tech.
