The Minutemen suffered its second-straight loss after seven-straight victories Wednesday night, falling to Maine, 68-56. UMass shot just 22.9 percent from the field and 2-of-14 from beyond the arc in the second half. The Minutemen’s schedule doesn’t get easier, as Big East team Seton Hall heads into Amherst Saturday.

Shooting woes plague Minutemen against Black Bears
UMass has relied heavily on players like Anthony Gurley and Freddie Riley to score points. As a team against Maine Wednesday evening, the Minutemen went 18-of-61 from the field and 5-for-25 from 3-point range. UMass also missed a number of layups which ultimately resulted in their second-straight loss of 2010.

Minutemen escape Sacred Heart, 73-65, on Wednesday
It wasn’t pretty, and it surely wasn’t easy, but the Massachusetts men’s basketball team finished off Sacred Heart on Wednesday with Anthony Gurley earning a team-high 18 points. While the victory encompassed a few different scorers, the Minutemen had a tough time starting right out of the gate.

Senior Gary Correia mentoring freshman Daryl Traynham
Although Massachusetts men’s basketball coach Derek Kellogg selected Gary Correia as his starter at point guard, he likes to see his newest guard, Daryl Traynham, battle Correia at practice. The 5-9 guard is learning about how to get the ball to his teammates from the more experienced guard.

Minutemen begin season at home against Rider
The Massachusetts men’s basketball team opens its regular season on Friday when it takes on Rider. The last time the Minutemen took the court was in an exhibition game at the Mullins Center where UMass thrashed Division III opponent Brandeis, 83-60.

UMass tops Brandeis in preseason action
The Massachusetts men’s basketball team saw contributions from 11 different players on its way to an 83-60 rout over Brandeis. Daryl Traynham led all scorers with 15 points.
