Behind Minutemen backs Jonathan Hernandez and John Griffin, UMass defeated No. 4 William and Mary Saturday, 27-23 for their first victory of the season. Hernandez ran for 132 yards on 25 carries while Griffin ran for 84 yards on 21 carries.

Griffin hopes to help fill loss of Nelson in backfield
After Northeastern cut their football program after the 2009 season, UMass brought in tailback John Griffin, who still had one more collegiate year. Although it was a tough situation, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Griffin, along with the Minutemen, who hope to use Griffin with Jonathan Hernandez this season.
