The Massachusetts tennis team kicked off the fall season at the Eastern Collegiate Invitational at Army in West Point, N.Y. this past weekend. Sophomore Julia Comas won the Flight B singles championship while freshman Jessica Podlofsky won Flight D. No. 1 singles player Yuliana Motyl, however, had a bye in the first round before losing to Hofstra’s Elena Ivanova in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2.

The Massachusetts tennis team will return nine players from the previous campaign along with three additional recruits. UMass coach Judy Dixon believes her team has the skill to win games when it counts.

When recruiting new players for the Massachusetts tennis team, UMass coach Judy Dixon wasn’t afraid to search abroad for her incoming players. Dixon has traveled to Spain, Germany and Poland in years past.
