The third floor of the Arnold House in the University of Massachusetts will remain closed on Friday as a result of a fire that occurred early on Thursday morning.

The fire, which was contained in an office room on the floor, was put out by the Amherst Fire Dept. with extinguishers and was traced to a miniature refrigerator. The Amherst Police Dept. and UMass Police Dept. were also notified.

“There was a fire alarm that came in at 5:55 a.m.,” said Ed Blaguszewski, the director of strategic communications at UMass. “The alarm systems worked well. It’s fortunate that this occurred very early in the morning before business hours had started.”

No one was injured as a result of the fire and there is no current estimate on damages.

Blaguszewski said a moderate amount of black smoke was seen in the hallway of the third floor.

The third and fourth floors were closed today for cleaning, and Blaguszewski said he hoped the entire building could reopen by Monday.
