Quiet night leads to four arrests

The University of Massachusetts campus remained fairly quiet Sunday night, despite a crowd of approximately 300 students that gathered in the Southwest residential area to celebrate the New England Patriots victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in the Super Bowl.

Cheers of Dynasty could be heard as students threw burning rolls of toilet paper. Several rounds of fireworks were set off as well.

Only four arrests were made, according to Sgt. Michael Ross of the University Police Department. No injuries were reported. He said UMass police had no problems clearing students from the area. The crowd was dispersed by about 10:45 p.m.

People basically were there for the moment and left on their own, said Ross. It was just a peaceful celebration for the most part.

During the Patriot s Super Bowl victory last year, over 2,500 students crowded into Southwest to celebrate, resulting in four arrests. Police dispersed the crowd with several rounds of pepper balls.
