North B residents evacuated from building

Residents of the North Apartments building B were evacuated on Saturday morning after smoke from a fire extinguisher filled the fourth floor of the apartment complex.

Apartment Living Advisor Meghan Ferrante said residents were evacuated into the courtyard around 12:30 a.m. and returned around 2 a.m.

“I was in for the night and just as my friend was leaving she said I had better take a look outside,” said Ferrante. “Smoke was everywhere, and I could barely see down the hallway.”

Just as Ferrante was about to call the police, the fire alarm activated.

According to Ferrante, the source of the smoke was from room 403 and came from a chemical fire extinguisher.

“It did not smell like smoke from a fire, but more like chemicals, and the extinguishers we use aren’t fire based, but chemical based,” she said.

She added that the extinguisher went off after several residents tampered with it, but said that this is not definite.

No one was injured in the incident.
