Softball home opener canceled

Massachusetts softball pitcher Sara Plourde had to wait another day to get a chance at breaking the school’s all-time strikeout record.

Tuesday’s scheduled home opener against Dartmouth was canceled due to cold temperatures and high winds in the area, according to UMassAthletics.com. No make-up game is expected to be scheduled for the game, likely due to the fact that it is a non-conference matchup.

Plourde will get a chance to overtake Danielle Henderson’s mark of 1,343 in today’s tilt against Quinnipiac, however, in what will be the team’s home opener assuming the weather approves.

The senior ace is seven strikeouts away from sitting atop the record books and, with an average of 12.4 strikeouts per seven innings, the numbers suggest today will be the day history is made. That is suggesting today’s weather agrees as well. Weather.com predicts temperatures to be in the low-to-mid 50’s by start time, with a 40 percent chance of showers.

Assuming today’s game will be played, first pitch is set for 3 p.m. at the UMass Softball Complex.
