The following police logs are from the University of Massachusetts Police Department from Friday, Oct. 11, 2019 to Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019.
Friday, Oct. 11, 2019
9:15 a.m.: A reporting party received an email scam of a person looking to hire English tutors, and it was discovered that the employer offered to send a check for $2,500. The reporting party was only to be earning $400. No personally identifiable information was shared with the suspect and the reporting party did not pay any money to the suspect. No crimes were committed. The reporting party forwarded the email to the officer, and the officer stated he will be alerting Information Technology.
9:36 a.m.: Traffic enforcement was conducted on University Drive. The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for an inspection violation. The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for defective equipment. Six traffic citations were issued.
10:53 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for improper registration decal on Lincoln Avenue.
5:34 p.m.: An officer thought a vehicle drove from the storage area in Lot 12 on Forestry Way, but after talking with the operator, the officer realized the car had been parked on the correct side of the gates. No crime was involved. The party had gone for a walk.
8:53 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding outside Webster Hall on Orchard Hill Drive.
9:21 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for no headlights on lower Massachusetts Avenue.
11:50 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a defective brake light on Massachusetts Avenue.
12:05 p.m.: A gray backpack found at the Fine Arts Center on Presidents Drive was brought to the UMPD station.
12:55 a.m.: A passerby found a Bank of America Travel Rewards Visa card outside the southside of the Integrative Learning Center. The card was brought to the UMPD station. A check on Spire indicated that the owner of the card is an active student residing in Northampton. The card and Spire printout were placed in an evidence locker for return.
2:03 p.m.: A wallet was brought to the UMPD station on East Pleasant Street.
3:42 p.m.: A residence director at Leach Hall on Eastman Lane found a license. The license was brought to the UMPD station.
12:25 p.m.: Fire Engine 1 was notified of an accidental or defective supervisory alarm that went off at Maple House at the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Area on Commonwealth Avenue.
9:45 p.m.: Fire Engine 1 was notified of an accidental or defective supervisory alarm that went off at Maple House at the Commonwealth Honors College Residential Area on Commonwealth Avenue.
12:28 p.m.: There was a CopLogic report of a safety vest stolen off a bicycle parked outside the Campus Center on Campus Center Way. The vest was described as orange in color with an approximate value of $25. An incident report was completed.
4:32 p.m.: A reporting party stated his bike was stolen from the bike rack outside Holdsworth Hall on Holdsworth Way. The reporting party stated his bike was stolen sometime between 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The bike was described as a red KHS with black handles, and was not locked up when it was taken.
1:20 p.m.: A residence director stated there was some graffiti on the second-floor lounge of Webster Hall on Orchard Hill Drive.
1:42 p.m.: A light truck backed into a vehicle on the northbound lane on Washington Road near Fearing Street along the curb. The truck sustained minor damage due to the height of the bumper. The other vehicle sustained more significant damage to the hood, front bumper cover and driver’s side headlight due to override from the truck. No injuries were reported, and both vehicles were operable.
3:32 p.m.: An officer was flagged down by a Peter Pan bus in regards to an accident. The accident occurred on the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and North Pleasant Street.
3:18 p.m.: Fire Engine 1 was notified of an accidental or defective alarm that went off at the Life Science Labs on Thatcher Road.
4:57 p.m.: A reporting party stated a group of six to eight parties on the roof of Bartlett Hall near Tobin Hall. The reporting party was unsure if parties were still on the roof. The parties were out of sight at the time. An officer checked the roof access areas of Bartlett. No one was in the area at the time.
5:19 p.m.: Officers were present for the UMass hockey game against RPI.
Accident-Leaving the Scene
8:19 p.m.: A reporting stated a hit-and-run on North Service Road at 1:20 p.m. A green SUV driven by a white female hit another vehicle. The reporting party stated there is paint transfer on the driver’s side bumper. The party did not wish to file a report.
9:45 p.m.: Fire Engine 1 was notified of an accidental or defective pre-alarm that went off at Brown Hall on Eastman Lane.
11:38 p.m.: A 54-year-old male from Brooklyn Center, Minnesota was arrested for operating under the influence of drugs and resisting arrest at the West Lots.
Saturday, Oct. 12, 2019
1:17 a.m.: A raccoon was reported at Lot 32E (south of Massachusetts Avenue) on Massachusetts Avenue. The area checked ok.
1:51 a.m.: An occupant yelled out at officers at a traffic stop on Tobin Road. The vehicle parked on Tobin Road, and the parties were advised to use better judgement.
Alarm – (Prefire)
3:23 a.m.: Fire Engine 1 was notified of an accidental or defective pre-alarm at Brown Hall on Eastman Lane.
Disabled Motor Vehicle
7:48 a.m.: Fire Engine 1 stated there was a vehicle broken down in the middle of the roadway on Fearing Street. Ernie’s Towing was contacted. A tow truck came to the scene and towed the vehicle.
8:03 a.m.: A reporting party states there was a Trader Joe’s bag with unknown contents on the circle on Campus Center Way. When investigated, what looks to be competitive biking clothing with no identification were found. The items were brought to the UMPD station on East Pleasant Street.
2:44 a.m.: A cadet turned in a license that had been found in the lobby of John Quincy Adams Hall on Fearing Street. The owner could not be reached, and it was tagged as property.
9:12 a.m.: A reporting party states he found a phone by the Campus Center. The item was brought to the UMPD station on East Pleasant Street.
12:58 p.m.: A member of UMass Housing in Crabtree Hall said a car key was found in Hamlin Hall a month ago. The item was brought to the UMPD station on East Pleasant Street.
1:24 a.m.: Two parties were stopped on Massachusetts Avenue and brought to the station. A small amount of alcohol was dumped and the parties were given verbal warnings. A parent arrived for the parties in the lobby.
1:57 a.m.: An occupant of a vehicle yelled out at officers on a traffic stop. The vehicle was observed to have a broken taillight. Upon being stopped on Commonwealth Avenue, the operator completed field sobriety tests and did not show signs of impairment. He was issued a verbal warning for defective equipment. All three parties were advised to use better judgement.
10:32 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle near the Robsham Visitor Center on Massachusetts Avenue for their inspection.
6:26 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued for a stop sign violation to the operator of a vehicle on University Drive.
6:41 p.m.: A field sobriety test was conducted on the operator of a vehicle on Massachusetts Avenue. It “check ok,” but a verbal warning was issued.
6:56 p.m: The Amherst Police Department were advised when the operator of a vehicle near Amherst Copy on East Pleasant Street was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights.
7:17 p.m.: A traffic citation was issued and Ernie’s was requests after a field sobriety test was conducted on University Drive. The operator of the vehicle was transported to Northampton Street in Amherst by an officer.
8:41 p.m.: A summons for arrest was issued to the operator of a vehicle on University Drive for failure to stop/yield.
4:54 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was pulled over on University Drive and the operator attempted to renew their license online.
9:54 p.m.: Various vehicles were stops on Massachusetts over the span of an hour and were issued verbal warnings for speed, unrenewed licenses and no tags in parking lots among other things.
Alarm – Fire; Supervisory
9:32 p.m.: Fire Engine 1 was notified of an accidental/defective alarm at Maple House in the Commonwealth Honors College on Commonwealth Avenue.
2:48 a.m.: A party was given a courtesy transport from Lot 33A on University Drive to Thatcher Hall. A resident assistance was contacted for key to assist the party.
11:31 p.m.: A small amount of alcohol was destroyed on the scene at a bus stop on Massachusetts Avenue and one false ID was taken for destruction. Individuals did not meet the protective custody criteria.
1:15 a.m.: An intoxicated female party was reported in the floor of a women’s bathroom in Gorman Hall on Butterfield Terrace. The party was conscious and vomiting. The party had vomited in the bathroom and stated she was drinking earlier. She was alert, oriented and mobile. She did not meet protective custody criteria and left with her friends.
2:49 a.m.: A reporting party stated there was an intoxicated female party at Gorman Hall on Butterfield Terrace. The female party was conscious and had been vomiting. Amherst Fire Department was requested and en route. The party’s condition had deteriorated from earlier. She vomited small amounts several more times while with her friend. During evaluation by the police, she was responsive only to pain. She was transported by AFD to Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
3:05 a.m.: An intoxicated party was reported at Thatcher Hall on Thatcher Road. The party did not meet protective custody criteria.
11:33 p.m.: An individual was taken into protective custody at Berkshire Dining Common in the Southwest Residential Area.
Sunday, Oct. 13, 2019
12:01 a.m.: A motor vehicle outside of the Whitmore Administration Building on President’s Drive “checks ok.”
12:16 a.m.: An Uber driver was parked on the sidewalk of North Pleasant Street waiting for their fair before being sent along.
1:47 a.m.: Hockey equipment on the top of a vehicle outside of Butterfield Dorm was reported and investigated. It seemed intentional and checked okay.
12:18 a.m.: A party on Hicks Way was informed of the dangers of riding a skateboard in the middle of the way.
2:11 a.m.: A group outside of the Fine Arts Center on President’s Drive “checked ok.”
12:30 a.m.: An officer stopped the operator of a motor vehicle on University Drive and issued them a verbal warning.
12:37 a.m.: A traffic warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on North Pleasant Street for an occurrence on Massachusetts Avenue.
1:40 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding on Governors Drive.
2:54 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Commonwealth Avenue for driving over the speed limit.
10:36 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle near Lot 25S on Commonwealth Avenue for their registration.
5:02 p.m.: A verbal warning for defective equipment was issued to the operator of a vehicle near Totman Gymnasium on Eastman Lane.
6:16 p.m.: APD were notified for a verbal warning to the operator of a vehicle for failure to yield on North Pleasant Street.
6:29 p.m.: Ernie’s was requested on University Drive and towed a vehicle. The operator, who was not registered, states it was a RMV error and they will be contacting the RMV on Tuesday.
12:53 a.m.: An individual was removed to the hospital.
1:05 a.m.: An individual inside of Gorman Dorm inside of Butterfield Hall was taken into protective custody.
7:25 a.m.: A reporting party states there was a bike laying off to the shoulder of lower Massachusetts Avenue, almost at the entrance of Route 116. An officer investigated and found the bike technically laid in the town of Hadley and he will leave it on the side of the road.
12:30 p.m.: A member of UMass Housing states they found a wallet and a credit card in Dickinson Hall in the Orchard Hill Residential Area. The items were brought to the UMPD station on East Pleasant Street.
Alarm – (Prefire)
11:47 a.m.: Environmental Health and Safety were notified of a sounding alarm in Prince Hall on Sunset Avenue. The alarm was triggered by hair products.
12:49 p.m.: An incident report was completed for a sign someone took from Orchard Hill Drive.
8:31 p.m.: A reporting party states his bike was stolen around 8 p.m. outside of Berkshire Dining Commons. It was yellow with flames and was locked. An incident report was completed.
12:52 p.m.: A residential director states she did not have a parking space on Tobin Road. She later called back and stated she found a space.
Alarm – Fire Trouble
1:59 p.m.: Environmental Health and Safety were notified of an accidental/defective alarm in the Life and Science Laboratories. Fire Engine 1 states the alarm was due to a low battery.
10:43 p.m.: Fire Engine 1 was notified for an accidental/defective alarm in North Residential Building B.
3:44 p.m.: A reporting party states a loud drumming was coming from the Northeast Quad. An officer reported the students drumming in the area did not seem excessive and advised the students to keep the noise to a minimum.
