Welcome events for new students and art gallery openings

The following are five highlights of what is happening on the University of Massachusetts campus and surrounding community from Monday, Jan. 20 to Sunday, Jan. 26.

Winter Welcome for New Students

New students entering UMass this semester are invited to meet and connect with other new students, University staff and student leaders in the Campus Center Auditorium from 5:30 – 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 21. The event will also feature a complimentary taco bar.

Private Showing of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” for New Students

New students are invited to a free private showing of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” at Cinemark Theater at the Hampshire Mall on Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 7 p.m. The first 250 students who entered the University in January 2020  to pick up their ticket in the Campus Center Concourse between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. the day of the screening will be able to attend the private showing.

Spring Activities Expo

Explore over 200 Registered Student Organizations at the annual spring activities expo from 3 – 6 p.m. on Friday. The fair hosted by the Student Engagement and Leadership and the Student Organization Resource Center will take place in the Campus Center Auditorium.

CSSA Spring Festival Gala

The UMass Chinese Students and Scholars Association is holding its annual Chinese Festival on Saturday, Jan. 25 from 12 – 10 p.m. in the Campus Center Auditorium. Students will be able to watch performances from DBJ Dance Crew, the Chinese Culture Association and TASC as well as Mount Holyoke College’s RMB dance crew. Attendees will be served Chinese cuisine and drinks and can participate in raffles.

Exhibits and Openings

Hampden Gallery is holding three exhibit openings and receptions on Sunday, Jan. 26 from 2 – 4 p.m. Springfield, Massachusetts native and UMass alumna Nancy Johnson opens “Self Portraits From Past to Present,” Christine Texiera opens “Release the Moorings” and Sloan Tomlinson opens “Excogitation.” All three exhibits will close on Friday, Feb. 28.
