Friday, Feb. 14, 2020

Health/Safety Hazard

9:00 a.m.: A caller reported water coming from the fire hook up outside the Honors College dorms. Fire Engine One checked to see if it had anything to with testing being done currently by Fire Engine Six. The water was due to fire pump testing.

Community Outreach Officer

10:45 a.m.: A community outreach officer was present at the off-campus student center in Bartlett Hall on Hicks Way with the Amherst Police Department.

1:41 p.m.: A community outreach officer was present at Sunrise Printing in Hadley.

Assist Other Police Departments

11:27 a.m.: Massachusetts State Police requested K-9 assistance at the South Hadley Michael E. Smith Middle School. K-9 Alec conducted a sweep of the gymnasium, halls with approximately 200 lockers and the library area. All searches were negative.

Traffic Stop

11:41 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to move over to the right for emergency vehicles on Commonwealth Avenue.

11:49 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning on Commonwealth Avenue.

3:49 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning in Lot 71 (west of the Whitmore Administration Building) on Massachusetts Avenue. A resource card was provided to the operator.

4:24 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding and a crosswalk violation on Massachusetts Avenue.

4:48 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for an inspection violation at Lot 33 on University Drive.

5:07 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning on Massachusetts Avenue.

5:16 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for an inspection violation at Lot 71 on Massachusetts Avenue.

6:08 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for sidewalk operation outside Brown Hall on Eastman Lane.

7:16 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was stopped on the sidewalk of the Southwest tunnel. The operator was issued a verbal warning and escorted back to the roadway.

9:14 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights on Commonwealth Avenue.

9:35 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning on lower Massachusetts Avenue.

11:38 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to stop or yield on Eastman Lane.

11:55 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning by Totman Gymnasium on North Pleasant Street. APD was notified about the stop. The passengers were given verbal warnings for not wearing seatbelts.

Annoying Behavior

12:30 a.m.: A party at the UMPD station on East Pleasant Street reported annoying behavior that occured in the Campus Center basement yesterday between 7:00 p.m. and 11:00 p.m.

2:48 p.m.: An incident report was completed about a student who was yelling while a professor was trying to teach in the Thompson Hall lowrise building on Hicks Way.

Assist Citizen

4:16 p.m.: A reporting party requested a letterhead with regards to a previous case from 2018.

Accident-Property Damage

4:20 p.m.: A two-vehicle accident occured on Tobin Road. There were no injuries. An incident report was completed.

9:11 p.m.: A vehicle side swiped another vehicle outside Herter Hall on Presidents Drive. Officers were unable to contact the driver of the second vehicle, and an orange card was left. An incident report was completed.

Alarm-Fire Trouble

4:26 p.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental or defective fire alarm at the Lederle Graduate Research Center tower on North Pleasant Street. The trouble was cleared before F1 arrived.

11:45 p.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental or defective fire alarm at Birch Hall of the Commonwealth Honors College on Commonwealth Avenue.

Vandalism/Bias Related

4:45 p.m.: A reporting party stated there was a very faint swastika in the elevator on the plastic near the buttons. An officer on the scene was unable to locate the swastika. The reporting party was contacted and updated. An incident report was completed.

Alarm-Fire; Supervisory 

5:59 p.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental or defective supervisory alarm at Lincoln Apartments Building Eight on Lincoln Avenue. The alarm was cleared.

Parking Complaint

6:39 p.m.: A vehicle parked on Hicks Way next to the Commonwealth Honors College was issued a parking ticket. The vehicle was moved.

Alarm-Fire

8:17 p.m.: F1 and Amherst Fire Department were contacted about an accidental or defective fire alarm at Lincoln Apartments Building Two on Lincoln Avenue. The alarm was sounding but nothing was showing on the fire panel. F1 and AFD were sent to the scene, and the alarm was reset.

Lost/Found Property

9:41 p.m.: An iPhone and several cards, including a UCard, were found at the Campus Center on Campus Center Way. The lost items were brought to the UMPD station.

Disabled Motor Vehicle

10:44 p.m.: APD was out with a disabled motor vehicle on Eastman Lane by North Apartments requesting assistance. AAA came to the scene. A courtesy transport to Coolidge Hall.

Saturday, Feb. 15, 2020

Traffic Stop

12:12 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights on Ricky Hill Road and Stadium Drive in Hadley.

12:29 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning on Commonwealth Avenue.

12:29 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was stopped on Thatcher Road. The operator, an 18-year-old male from Springfield, Massachusetts, was arrested and charged with speeding above 20 mph on an unposted campus roadway, operating under-the-influence, possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, possession of liquor under the age of 21 and trespassing.

12:41 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding and a marked lanes violation on Governors Drive.

12:50 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to stop or yield on University Drive.

1:00 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding at Totman Gymnasium on North Pleasant Street.

1:07 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for travelling the wrong way on a one-way street.

1:40 a.m.: A vehicle was stopped at the intersection of North Pleasant Street and Fearing Street. The vehicle had six occupants. APD was notified of the stop. The operator was issued a verbal warning for a marked lanes violation, and one of the parties exited the vehicle.

1:51 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to stop or yield at the First Baptist Church of Amherst on North Pleasant Street.

2:03 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning at the Integrative Learning Center on North Pleasant Street.

2:14 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights at the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue.

2:34 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a safety violation on Massachusetts Avenue.

2:44 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a marked lanes violation by the Mullins Center on Commonwealth Avenue.

3:50 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle for operating without headlights on Commonwealth Avenue.

3:57 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle for operating without headlights on University Drive.

11:07 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Mullins Way for a speed violation that occurred on Massachusetts Avenue.

11:55 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle near Lot 25S for a defective brake light.

6:40 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle at the Robsham Memorial Center for Visitors on Massachusetts Avenue for operating without headlights.

6:45 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on University Drive.

7:48 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle by the Southwest Circle on University Drive for operating without headlights.

11:29 p.m.: A verbal warning was issued to the operator of a vehicle on Massachusetts Avenue for going the wrong way on a one-way road.

11:46 p.m.: A traffic citation was issued to the operator of a vehicle on University Drive before the vehicle renewed roadside.

Disabled Motor Vehicle

1:28 a.m.: A disabled motor vehicle was reported by University Drive. AAA was already contacted, and the vehicle was not in the road.

Intoxicated Person

2:06 a.m.: An intoxicated male party was conscious, semi-alert and had trouble walking in Wheeler Hall on Infirmary Way. The party did not meet protective custody criteria. 

Assist Citizen

9:33 a.m.: A lost motorist on Presidents Drive was assisted.

9:40 a.m.: A lost motorist on Presidents Drive was assisted.

Traffic Enforcement

11:02 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle on Commonwealth Avenue was stopped for a crosswalk violation.

Assist Agency

11:06 a.m.: Assistance was provided at the Mullins Center for the UMass vs. Dayton basketball game.

Community Outreach Officer

12:50 p.m.: An officer provided information about a hands-free driving law at Hampshire Dining Commons.

Suspicious Person/Activity

1:51 p.m.: A reporting party states he spoke to someone that needed his social security number and gave part of it before realizing it was a scam. The party in Kennedy Hall was referred to the social security hotline.

11:43 p.m.: A party was taken into protective custody.

Alarm – Fire Trouble

2:30 p.m.: Environmental Health and Safety was notified of an accidental/defective alarm in Birch Hall in the Commonwealth Honors College. The alarm, which was caused by an unknown reason, was cleared by the arrival of F1.

5:45 p.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental/defective alarm in Linden House in the Commonwealth Honors College. The alarm was reset.

Larceny

3:01 p.m.: The reporting party stated he locked his dark grey and black Sidewinder bicycle to a bench facing the parking garage before Thanksgiving break. The value of the bike is about $850. An incident report was completed.

4:56 p.m.: The reporting party stated his black backpack, which included his red MacBook Air, were stolen from a desk area on the 20th and 22nd floor of the W.E.B. Du Bois Library. All of the items were found and accounted for on the 17th floor.

Parking Complaint

3:43 p.m.: The reporting party stated no Residential Life parking spaces were available in Lot 50 and was unable to make contact with the operators of the offending vehicles. The reporting party eventually found a parking space and requested tickets be left on the offending vehicles. Three parking tickets were then issued.

Lost/Found Property

4:52 p.m.: A wallet was found at the bus stop located at Haigis Mall. An officer brought the wallet to the UMPD station.

Alarm – Fire

8:00 p.m.: F1 and AFD were en route to Herter Hall on Presidents Drive. There was no smoke or fire and the alarm was reset.

Vandalism

8:35 p.m.: The reporting party stated that at 2 a.m., she found “Asia, sex” written on her door in pencil. The reporting party took a picture of the writing and erased it. An incident report was completed.

Sunday, Feb. 16, 2020

Traffic Stop

12:08 a.m.: A traffic citation was issued to the operator of a vehicle traveling on Fearing Street. The vehicle was then stopped on Fearing and North Pleasant Street.

1:11 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was pulled over on University Drive. The operator was not the registered operator.

1:12 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning by the Robsham Memorial Center for Visitors.

1:18 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning near Totman Gymnasium on Eastman Lane. 

1:25 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a failure to display a license plate or register vehicle on Fearing Street.

1:57 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a safety violation and operating without a registration on lower Massachusetts Avenue.

2:29 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for sidewalk operation outside the Whitmore Administration Building on Presidents Drive.

2:33 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning on Commonwealth Avenue.

2:54 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for using a cellphone while operating a vehicle in Lot 32E on Massachusetts Avenue.

3:01 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a marked lanes violation on Eastman Lane.

3:24 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights on Governors Drive.

3:38 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for travelling the wrong way on a one-way street in Lot 29A on Chancellors Drive.

3:54 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding on Massachusetts Avenue.

5:20 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for a defective headlight at Lot 25 on Commonwealth Avenue.

5:38 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding on Governors Drive.

6:45 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning on lower Massachusetts Avenue.

7:36 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a traffic citation on lower Massachusetts Avenue.

7:39 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning on Governors Drive.

7:52 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding in Lot 45 (east of the PVTA Bus Facility) on Holdsworth Way.

10:10 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding at Conte Polymer Science and Engineering at Governors Drive.

10:30 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a written traffic warning.

10:43 p.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for operating without headlights.

2:15 a.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental or defective fire alarm that went off at Birch Hall of the Commonwealth Honors College on Commonwealth Avenue.

Suspicious Person/Activity

12:16 a.m.: A party was removed to the hospital.

12:27 a.m.: A party was issued a summons for arrest.

12:44 a.m.: A verbal warning was issued to a party outside of Mahar Auditorium on Presidents Drive for public urination.

1:01 a.m.: A party was issued a summons for arrest.

2:48 a.m.: A suspicious party by Mahar Auditorium on Massachusetts Avenue was checked ok.

3:33 p.m.: A reporting party stated a male party was lying on the ground asking for money at the bus stop at Haigis Mall on Presidents Drive. The party was described as a white male with a dark hat and a jacket. An officer stated the party checked ok. The party was waiting for the bus to Northampton.

Noise Complaint

3:40 a.m.: A residential assistant stated she received a complaint from a resident that there is a loud TV in one of the dorms. The RA stated she attempted to knock, speak loudly and even push a note under the door with no success in contacting the residents in the room. She was requesting police assistance. An officer stated there were no noises that were beyond reasonable.

9:58 a.m.: The operator of a vehicle was issued a verbal warning for speeding on Massachusetts Avenue.

Fraud

9:58 a.m.: A reporting party came in concerned about a scam type email he received. He answered an email regarding employment and then received a check for the amount of $2,150. An incident report was completed.

Alarm-(Prefire)

4:09 p.m.: F1 was notified of an accidental or defective pre-alarm at Prince Hall on Sunset Avenue. The alarm was caused by vaping. F1 reset the alarm.

9:46 p.m.: F1 was notified of a pre-alarm at Brown Hall on Eastman Lane. The alarm was caused by an air freshener. F1 reset the alarm.

911 Hang-up Call

4:46 p.m.: UMPD received a 911 call from the help phone at Cashin Hall on Eastman Lane. Nothing could be heard on the call, and nobody was found in the area of the call.

Lost/Found Property

7:21 p.m.: A license was found in the visitor’s lot and was brought to the UMPD station.
