Hockey preseason podcast (part two): UMass’ biggest strengths and weaknesses

Defense a strong suit, goal-scoring a weak point for Minutemen heading into 2022-23

On this episode of the hockey preseason podcast, Colin McCarthy, Kayla Gregoire and Sophie Weller discussed what they think the Massachusetts hockey team’s biggest strength and weakness is heading into the 2022-23 season.

The Minutemen’s defense is always one of their biggest strengths, and this season there is additional strength in the fact that so many players are new. That means other teams don’t know what to expect out of UMass, and that gives somewhat of an element of surprise when teams are playing the Minutemen.

The biggest challenges facing UMass are its scoring and goaltending. Both are areas where the Minutemen have a lot of depth, but they lost notable players that contributed to most of that last season. Nobody on last year’s top line is on the current roster, and losing Matt Murray will make a major impact on the team as well.
