The Massachusetts women’s lacrosse team fell 22-5 against No. 1 Boston College on Wednesday afternoon. The Eagles (4-0) now lead 16-14 in program wins against the Minutewomen (0-2).
UMass failed to match up offensively with the reigning national champion. In the second quarter, Boston College outshot and outscored the Minutewomen 12-1 and 11-0 respectively. UMass let up 15 unanswered goals to the Eagles in the first half.
Boston College’s Rachel Clark finished the game with six goals and one assist. The senior attacker scored her third goal of the day with 43 seconds left on the clock in the first quarter off a pass from Mia Mascone. Clark led the Eagles in goals last season with 78.
Kassidy Morris and Delaney Rodriguez-Shaw both posted multi-goal games for the Minutewomen with two apiece. Rodriguez-Shaw finished with three points after assisting Morris’ second goal on a woman-up advantage. The senior scored her first goal of the day on a free position shot early into the third quarter after Boston College defender Shea Baker received a yellow card. With the right half of the arc open, Rodriguez-Shaw ran towards the goal and fired the shot into the net for her second goal of the day.
Emma LoPinto, Mckenna Davis and Molly Driscoll all recorded hat tricks against UMass, with LoPinto scoring four goals and Davis and Driscoll each netting three. The senior attacker put the Eagles on the board less than two minutes into the start of the game. LoPinto earned a first-half hat trick on a woman-up opportunity and was assisted by Driscoll.
Davis opened up scoring for the second quarter on a behind the back scoop shot in front of the crease off a feed from Kylee Colbert. The senior scored her third goal in the final moments of the second quarter off the power play assisted by Lydia Colasante.
Mascone scored back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart in the second quarter, the first being a power play goal assisted by Davis. The graduate student also picked up four assists, two to Clark, one to LoPinto, and the last to junior Brooke McLoy, who caught the ball in front of the crease, faked the shot and put the ball in the back of the net.
Joining Morris and Rodriguez-Shaw on the scoreboard was junior Norah Prizzi. The midfielder scored her first goal of the season on a free position shot.
Catrina Tobin stood between the pipes for the Minutewomen, making nine saves on 31 shots on goal. The junior was tested throughout the matchup but came up big in some moments. BC sophomore Alexa Kenney attempted a behind the back shot in front of the goal, but Tobin made the save.
Junior Shea Dolce started in net for the Eagles but switched with senior Emily English at the half. Dolce finished with two goals allowed on three shots on goal and one save, while English recorded three goals allowed on 12 shots on goal and nine saves.
Sophomore midfielder Bridget Valentine led UMass in caused turnovers with three. For BC, Baker and Morgan Smith both finished with two caused turnovers.
Other goal scorers for the Eagles include Colbert and Kelly Blake, who each put up one goal.
The Minutewomen received three yellow cards throughout the contest: Lauren Carey in the first quarter and Jordan Dean in the second and fourth quarters. Dean’s second yellow card came after too much contact with a Boston College attacker, and the senior’s stick broke in the process. For the Eagles, Baker and Morgan Smith received yellow cards.
UMass returns home to play Long Island University at Garber Field on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3:30 p.m.
