Colleen Williams was selected as the Offensive MVP of the Boilermaker Challenge Cup after netting the deciding goal in the Dayton women’s soccer team’s 1-0 triumph over Cal State Northridge in the championship match on Sunday.

The junior also scored a goal in Friday’s 3-1 win over a tough Kansas team, as the Flyers (6-1-0) emerged victorious in their second tournament hosted by a Big 10 school this season.

Williams’ teammate, senior Kelsey Miller, was also named the Defensive MVP of the tournament.

Seniors Kathleen Beljan, Emily Kenyon and Kelsey Owen, and sophomores Juliana Libertin and Sarah Senoyuit were all selected to the all-tournament team, while junior Katherine Boone collected three saves to secure her 17th shutout of her career at Dayton, ranking her third in school history in that category.

As a preseason favorite for the Atlantic 10 crown, the Flyers have looked sharp in their non-conference schedule. Four of the team’s six wins have been decided by more than one goal, including an opening night beat-down of Middle Tennessee State, 7-2.

Dayton continues on with non-conference play as it heads to Columbus, Ohio to take on No. 22 Ohio State on Wednesday. The game showcases a rematch of last season’s second-round meeting in the NCAA tournament that saw the Buckeyes advance on a shootout.

Charlotte drops pair

Meanwhile, Charlotte lost in a pair of road games over the weekend to then-No. 14 Tennessee and No. 16 Memphis on Friday and Sunday, respectively.

The 49ers (2-4-2) dug themselves in an insurmountable hole early on Sunday as the Tigers (7-0-0) jumped out to a 6-0 advantage.

Charlotte ultimately got on the board in the 71st minute with senior Macky Wingo’s second goal of the season. Fellow senior Oni Bernard added a goal in the 77th minute, but it was too little too late as the 49ers fell, 6-2.

Friday was a similar story for Charlotte as Tennessee (6-1) recorded a 5-0 victory.

The Lady Volunteers did not wait long to start tacking on goals with Caroline Brown scoring from six yards out in the second minute of play.

Four minutes later it was Amy Harrison cashing in on assists from Emily Dowd and Kylie Bono, as Tennessee seized control of the contest early.

Although overmatched, the tough schedule should pay dividends when the 49ers begin A-10 play on Oct. 1 at Saint Louis.

Charlotte takes the field again on Thursday night at South Carolina.

Worden leads Rams

The Fordham women’s soccer team managed a weekend split, grabbing a 2-0 win over Stony Brook on Sunday and dropping a close one on Friday at Manhattan, 1-0.

Junior Annie Worden broke the scoreless tie in the 51st minute after receiving a crossing pass from freshman Maria Lorena Canicatti and striking a one-timer past Stony Brook goalkeeper Ashley Castanio to give the Rams (3-3-1) the lead.

Worden and Canicatti were not done there, as the two connected again in the 66th minute on Worden’s second goal of the contest to extend the lead to 2-0.

Fordham freshman goalkeeper Ally White secured the shutout in her first collegiate start of her career, only the third player in the program’s history to achieve such a feat.

Friday’s match had a different ending, one that was not so sweet for the Rams.

Fordham hung neck-and-neck with Manhattan, but the Jaspers (1-3-0) scored the game’s lone goal in the 63rd minute on a Devon Lutz goal.

The Rams had opportunities to net the equalizer late, but bids by freshman Jessica Widmann and sophomore Kelsey Dougherty Howard in the 85th and 89th minute, respectively, were denied as Manhattan held on.

Fordham returns to action on Friday against Utah Valley as part of the Texas A&M Tournament in College Station, Texas.
