Victor Cruz signs contract to author memoir

Victor Cruz carries a lot of titles: University of Massachusetts alum, New York Giants football star, Super Bowl champion and end zone salsa dancer.

How about adding “writer” to the mix?

The New York Post announced Wednesday that Cruz – the former Massachusetts football team wide receiver who received national attention during the New York Giants’ Super Bowl run this season – is close to signing a contract to author a memoir.

Celebra Books, a part of The Penguin Group, “won a spirited auction for the post-Super Bowl memoir of Cruz, with an advance estimated to be in the mid-six-figure range,” the Post reported. Celebra publishes books in both English and Spanish, the article stated.

The Post also reported that Cruz would ideally like to have the book published by July. This would allow him to make publicity appearances before the Giants begin training camp.

The book deal is the latest event in what has been a meteoric rise for the Paterson, N.J., native. A year ago, Cruz – an undrafted wide receiver who signed with the Giants – played in just three NFL regular season games without recording a reception.

Earlier this month, Cruz caught a first quarter touchdown reception in the Giants’ Super Bowl XLVI victory over the New England Patriots. His 1,536 receiving yards set a single-season franchise record.

And his salsa-dancing touchdown celebrations earned him an invitation to “Dancing with the Stars” – which he declined – as well as a chance to show his moves onstage as a Grammy’s award presenter on Feb. 12.
