Owls, Musketeers hold unbeaten A-10 marks

The Temple men’s soccer team relied on strong performances from junior Jake Lister and freshman Jared Martinelli in a 2-1 win over Duquesne on Sunday.

After scoring the game-winning goal for the Owls in their last game, Lister once again came out strong, finishing with a goal and an assist. Martinelli, who was ranked second in the nation among freshman in points per game entering the weekend, added a goal and an assist of his own, and now has 19 points on the season.

With the win, Temple (6-4-1, 2-0-0) not only remains undefeated in conference play, but also won its third straight game and improved its home record to 5-0-0 on the season.

The Owls got their first goal at the 37th minute when Martinelli set up for a corner kick. The freshman drove the ball into the box, where Lister, who had just checked into the game, got into position and drove the ball into the net to put Temple up 1-0.

The Dukes (4-8-0, 0-1-0) tied it up quickly after halftime on a goal by senior Joshua Patterson in the 47th minute. However, Lister and Martinelli teamed up once again in the 82nd minute, as Lister sent in a hard kick from the right side, which Martinelli directed into the net with his head to give the lead back to Temple.

Xavier remains undefeated

No. 13 Xavier kept its undefeated streak alive with a 2-1 victory over Butler on Sunday.

With the win, the Musketeers (9-0-2, 2-0-0) remain one of the seven unbeaten teams in the nation.

Xavier got its first goal in the 43rd minute from sophomore Andrew Jordan, who received a crossing pass by junior Matt Walker from the left side of the box, drilled it home to put his team up, 1-0.

However, after a deflected shot was poorly cleared by the Musketeers in the 77th minute, Butler junior Jordan Burt got the ball and booted it into the upper left corner to tie the game for the Bulldogs (2-4-4, 0-2-0).

Xavier responded quickly to take the game back.

In the 83rd minute, senior James Queree sent a free kick from 40 yards out over to junior Nick Hagglund near the far post, who headed the ball across the box back to a streaking Queree, who drove it into the net to put the Musketeers back on top.

Xavier senior goalkeeper Justin Marshall made one save to earn the win. Butler junior goalkeeper Jon Dawson made five saves in the loss.

Bonnies earn late win

St. Bonaventure scored two goals with seven minutes left in regulation to earn a 4-2 victory over Saint Joseph’s on Sunday.

In the 84th minute, Bonnies junior and leading scorer Brad Vanino received a pass from junior and assist leader Emmett O’Connor, and then booted in what would turn out to be the game-winning goal. Then with 41 seconds left in the game, O’Connor found sophomore Garth Brungard, who drove it in and put the game away for St. Bonaventure.

The Bonnies (3-9-0, 1-1-0) took a 1-0 lead going into halftime after junior Daniel Iannacito scored in the 13th minute off a pass from O’Connor.

However, the Hawks (4-7-0, 0-2-0) came out fired up in the second half, taking five shots in the first eight minutes before sophomore Alex Critzos tickled the twine to tie it up at one apiece.

SBU junior Kaine Moar reclaimed the lead for the Bonnies in the 62nd minute, but the Hawks were quick to tie it up again.

In the 67th minute, SJU freshman Tim Lazorko dribbled around several Bonnie defenders and booted it in to tie the game up again at two.
