It’s time to replace winter coats with light jackets

It’s that time of year when its finally acceptable to shed heavy winter coats and furs in favor of a light statement jacket.

Granted, it’s hard to find the ideal jacket to accompany you during the transition into warmer months. But luckily, there is an array of new jackets gracing stores meaning that you will definitely have plenty of choices. The purpose of a spring jacket is to provide little warmth but lots of style, inspiring your entire outfit.

To start is the classic look: the boxy leather jacket, a timeless piece that can give any outfit an edge. Affordable stores such as H&M and Nasty Gal both have great designs this season if you’re less inclined to fork out your cash for a real one.

Then, of course, there’s denim. Denim jackets have become a staple spring piece for any girl’s wardrobe, as they are easy to wear and give just enough warmth. If you want to mix up the fundamental look, try tailored denim or 90’s inspired double-denim, as both are back in style this season.

Colorful windbreakers – a new fashion trend making a buzz – are an easy way to be practical and fashionable, with shops such as Pac Sun and Adidas retailing the lightweight jacket in nearly every color.

Grid-marked blazers are another trend sweeping shops. Forever 21 has recently released a range of stripes, shades and styled blazers.

If you want a spanking new look, try a cropped jacket. The spring runways were filled with a new cut of cropped jackets, from the likes of designers like Chanel and Oscar de la Renta. To mimic these trends look for a utility jacket from ASOS.com, the online store. The jacket will look great at summer festivals.

If you want to embrace the ladylike trend currently occupying the catwalk, reach for a jacket with traditional Chinese embroidery, which can be found in Main Street shops like Zara. If this look isn’t for you, try a tweed blazer to finish your look. Prefer the tomboyish end of the style spectrum? Try a streamlined bomber or a varsity jacket to wear around campus.

For anyone in search of a statement spring jacket, that is tasteful but unique, consider a Burberry-inspired metallic trench jacket. Whether you buy it in matte or wet-look metallic, the style perfectly mixes the fresh fierce material with a traditionally flattering trench shape.

Whichever jacket you choose, it’s important you find one and wear it. But be cautious. While temperatures are certainly on the rise and winter in the rearview, Massachusetts weather has always been far from predictable.
