Just one day after a historic shootout win over Russia, the United States men’s ice hockey team moved on to this year’s quarterfinals, defeating Slovenia 5-1 in Sochi, Russia.

American Phil Kessel led the charge with a hat trick, including two goals in the first five minutes of the game. He became the first American since 2002 to score a hat trick in the Olympics and now has four goals in the tournament.

Ryan McDonagh and David Backes also scored for the United States, giving the Americans a 4-0 lead with a little under eight minutes left in the second period.

Ryan Miller got the win in net for USA, saving 17 of 18 shots in the process. Jonathan Quick, who was a hero in Saturday’s shootout against Russia, was given the day off.

The Americans will look to advance to the semifinals on Wednesday when they take on the winner between Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Miller finally medals

Despite failing to medal in his first two events, American alpine skier Bode Miller won the bronze in the men’s Super-G.

At 36 years old, Miller became the oldest alpine skier to win an Olympic medal, and will look to enhance his legacy when he competes in the men’s giant slalom, as well as the men’s slalom.

American men sweep slope style

The United States was dominant in the men’s freestyle skiing slope style events, claiming all three medals.

Joss Christenson was the winner of the event and took home the gold, while fellow Americans Gus Kenworthy and Nick Goepper took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Pikus-Pace wins silver

In her final Olympics appearance, Noelle Pikus-Pace won the silver medal in her final women’s skeleton race.

Pikus-Pace, who retired from skeleton after the 2010 Winter Olympics, came out of retirement in 2012 and ended her roller-coaster career on top , winning her first Olympic medal.

A look ahead

The United States women’s ice hockey team will take on Sweden Monday at 7:30 a.m. in the semifinals. With a win, the Americans could get redemption against Canada, who they lost to 3-2 in the preliminary round, in the gold medal game.

Other events on Monday include men’s snowboard cross, mixed ice dance and men’s aerials freestyle skiing.

Men’s ice hockey will resume on Tuesday, with four qualifying matches taking place, including the hosts Russia taking on Norway.
