In the latest incident in the recent chain of violence that’s plagued the area, a University of Massachusetts student was assaulted early Sunday morning on Shumway Street, near Amherst College, sustaining serious facial injuries.
Police say the victim, a 22-year-old-man, reported the crime at 9:18 p.m. Sunday. He suffered broken bones in his facial region, including damage to his eye socket and sinus cavity. He was treated at Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton before seeing eye and sinus specialists in Boston and Connecticut, respectively.
According to Lt. Ron Young, the head of the police detective bureau,
the injuries appeared to have been inflicted solely by fists and knees, without any other weapons. Young also stated that the 22-year-old was the only one injured in the fight.
