Amherst Police Department arrested 25 individuals Saturday evening and early Sunday morning according to The Springfield Republican. Three people suffered injuries related to a physical confrontation and were transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton. APD broke up a fight involving 20 to 25 people that stemmed from a large gathering related to the street’s annual “Hobart Hoedown” event. The charges against the 25 arrested include underage possession of alcohol, disorderly conduct, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and resisting arrest.
Hobart Lane is located less than a mile north of campus directly off of North Pleasant Street. The street features several apartment complexes that are typically rented to UMass students.
In past years, the event has attracted hundreds of party-goers and revelers. However, the police have made an effort in recent years to limit the event by increasing their presence in the area. The original “Hoedown” took place in 1994 under the name “Hobart Ho-Down ’94,” according to an article in The Republican. Between 1,200 and 1,500 people attended the event and 11 kegs were confiscated by police.
In addition to the annual “Hoedown,” dozens of college-aged individuals can be seen milling around the complexes on Friday and Saturday nights.
