I often enjoy listening to conservative talk radio in my spare time. It’s an uproariously funny source of entertainment that presents a good enough alternative to Saturday Night Live or Johnny Carson. I recommend trying it sometime; you can start with Michael Savage, then listen to Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and maybe even Ann Coulter when she’s on the air. They’re perfectly harmless and positively adorable when they start ranting and raving – as long as you don’t take them seriously, that is.
As good-natured and understanding as I am about the right’s peculiar brand of humor, there’s one statement my good friend Rush uttered on-air on Oct. 14 that made my jaw drop – one statement that was so outrageous, offensive and downright stupid that I stopped dead in my tracks. Speaking about President Barack Obama’s plan to send 100 U.S. troops to fight the rebel Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in central Africa, Limbaugh said: “Lord’s Resistance Army are Christians. They are fighting the Muslims in Sudan. And Obama has sent troops, United States troops to remove them from the battlefield, which means kill them … So that’s a new war, a hundred troops to wipe out Christians in Sudan, Uganda and – (interruption) no, I’m not kidding.” Limbaugh later posted the transcript of the show on his website under the title, “Obama Invades Uganda, Targets Christians.”
There are many things that are very, very wrong about Limbaugh’s little diatribe, but I’ll focus on three for the sake of brevity.
Firstly, Limbaugh has called the LRA a group of Christian “freedom fighters” fighting against an oppressive Muslim regime. For those of you who don’t know who the LRA is, it has been called a “notorious and brutal death cult” by Foreign Policy Magazine, and for good reason. Its battle for liberation involves periodically descending on a remote African village, raping and murdering every adult in sight, and then kidnapping all of the children. The boys become child soldiers, who are sent to the front lines where they die in droves, and the girls are gang raped and kept as sex slaves. Its resume also includes dismemberment of its victims as well as (interestingly enough) burning and looting Christian churches. As a blog on Foreign Policy Magazine’s website reported Oct. 15, Graeme Wood of Atlantic monthly once wrote of it: “An American diplomat in [the Central African Republic] compared the group to the Manson family, but given that the LRA has killed 12,000 people, the comparison is self-evidently unfair to Manson.” It’s a small wonder that the senior leadership of the LRA is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity. Calling these people Christians or freedom fighters is a clear slap in the face to either term.
All this information on the LRA was easily accessible through one Wikipedia search, but somehow Limbaugh must have forgotten to check his facts. The fact that he somehow managed to conveniently avoid telling his listeners this side of the story invites the conclusion that he either has no idea what he’s talking about or that he supports the LRA’s heroic actions. I hope for America’s sake that only the first conclusion is true, but I wouldn’t be at all surprised if this was not the case.
Secondly, Limbaugh insinuated that the Christian groups should have the support of the United States because “they are fighting the Muslims in Sudan.” He didn’t say Muslim extremists, he didn’t say al-Qaida, he said Muslims. This suggests that, according to him, Muslims are still the mortal enemies of the Christian people and must be fought even if you have to gang up with a band of rapists and murderers in order to do so. I honestly wonder whether he believes the Crusades are an ongoing event, and I wonder if he realizes how hypocritical it is to say Islam is the enemy of Western civilization while complaining that Christians are being discriminated against. I also wonder if Limbaugh realizes that there are 1.8 million Muslims living in the United States now. Why does this fair and balanced man consides over a million American citizens to be the enemies of America? I wonder if he considers the members of the LRA more “American” than the Muslims living here now. Maybe he’d like to invite these wholesome Christian people to our country to become U.S. citizens instead. I, however, happen to have many Muslim friends, and to the best of my knowledge none of them have raped or murdered anyone yet, so I would beg to differ.
Thirdly, our buddy Rush says that Obama is “invading” Uganda by sending a hundred special forces members to fight the LRA, and that we’re starting another war… he implies in his argument that the very notion of starting another “war” is disgusting and unpalatable to any patriotic American. I would like him to look at his own track record and check his own opinions about some previous American “war” before criticizing American intervention in Uganda. Limbaugh and his right-wing cohort weren’t exactly critical of the 150,000-man invasion and occupation of Iraq, or the invasion and occupation of Afghanistan, where we had 68,000 active duty troops in 2009. He conveniently forgot about both the hundreds of thousands of civilian casualties our wars cause, and the millions of refugees we’ve displaced. Could Limbaugh possibly argue that this conflict, one one-thousandth the size of the Iraq invasion, is too costly to maintain and immoral in its objectives? I would like to ask him how the two foreign wars the last right-wing President started were more morally justifiable than the intervention Obama is starting now.
I, as an American, am absolutely ashamed that Limbaugh dared to say these things during a live radio broadcast, and then have the audacity to post his words on the Internet for all to see. He was never the sharpest knife in the drawer, but I don’t think I’ve ever heard something more spiteful, venomous, idiotic or just plain wrong come out of his mouth. This entire debacle could have been averted if the conservative talk-show host restrained his vitriol just long enough to check his facts before going on air; unfortunately, it seems he believes bashing the president in front of a gullible American public is more important than protecting his credibility or a facade of intelligence.
On behalf of Limbaugh and the American people, I apologize to the entire world for this case study of bias and misinformation. But you know what? Maybe Limbaugh is on to something. I say we buy into his idea and don’t send the Special Forces in. Let’s send him in. Let’s fly Limbaugh to Uganda with nothing but a copy of the Bible and tell him to go aid the Christian freedom fighters in the Lord’s Resistance Army. And maybe, just maybe, when they get their hands on him, he will finally understand the dangers of jumping to conclusions.

Gene is of the notion that millions of Christians are being killed every second by the secular left. That Obama is a really a Muslim, communist, and will force all Americans into gay marriage as well as make sacrifices to to Satan! Gene we have photos of the children that were mutilated by Kony’s child army. The international community has Kony in the #1 spot of the wanted most criminal leaders list.

I do accept as true with all of the ideas you’ve offered to your post. They’re really convincing and can certainly work. Still, the posts are too brief for novices. May you please extend them a little from subsequent time? Thank you for the post.

He freely admitted that he had absolutely no idea what he was talking about, right before he started talking about this.
Mindlessly talking out of his ass about something he knows nothing about is something that Rush Limnbaugh is known for.
It’s what he’s good at, and his fans love it.
Chris • Nov 7, 2011 at 1:54 pm
Gene doesn’t care about what the LRA does, he only knows that Rush = Good and Liberals = Bad. He hasn’t made a single comment directly addressing the topic of this piece, he’s only tried to distract from the issue by bringing up the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the intervention in Libya. He knows that if he tries to debate the facts about the LRA and Rush’s disgusting support of them, he will lose.

Mr. Wysoczanski!
Thank you for telling it like it is!
Rush Limbaugh probably thought noone would check his ‘facts’ and information, but that obviously was a bit naïve. 🙂
Yes, the LRA are NOT christians. Yes, the LRA are a horde of violent murderers and rapists, killing thousands of people in central Africa, and brainwashing, drugging and forcing children into becoming child-soldiers.
Unfortunately people like Gene do not care to research information. They gullibly take what they hear for the truth (or are too prejudiced/biassed to want to check).
@Gene: Joseph Kony (the leader of the LRA) is wanted for war crimes and for crimes against humanity: http://www.haguejusticeportal.net/eCache/DEF/8/193.html
@Gene: please read this… http://www.warchild.org.uk/issues/the-lords-resistance-army?_kk=LRA&_kt=a35dea99-cfb1-4fd9-8cb8-847c2ecd7db8&gclid=CJeNlv-MjKwCFQaFDgodG3pHmQ
@Gene: So much for your “fellow Christian”.

@andy Of course you know people down there. And he said she said. Your worldview is that of a hypocrite. You were against Iraq and Afghanistan weren’t you? Then Obama got us in a 3rd war and maybe 4th. Where are the outcries now? Yes, hypocrite.
andy • Oct 26, 2011 at 2:10 pm
gene; you are a fool. You will find nothing, anywhere, that describes the LRA as anything other than psychopathic murderers with no genuine grievances, and yes, I do know people who have been on the ground over there. Your ability to skew the facts to fit your world view is breathtaking.
Gene • Oct 25, 2011 at 11:03 pm
@HeidiLiz Have you been on the ground over there? You appear to be from the same cloth that thought Saddam Hussein wasn’t such a bad guy, but is okay with the slaughter of Christians. I am sure you were all for digging up old wounds and ousting Kaddaffy. What about now that you see they are going to enact Sharia law? Do you care about what happens to other women? Learn to go beyond the left wing Google’s first page or two of search results and stop drinking the kool-aid.

Thank you for a wonderful article, detailing the truths behind Limbaugh’s claims. I think there is one motive behind his idiocy that you did not consider: That he does know exactly what he’s talking about, and he is purposely setting up this “Muslim vs Christian” thing to perpetuate his fabricated holy war – that is, Obama is a secret Muslim bent on destroying Christianity. I’m sure he considers his listeners too stupid and gullible to find the facts for themselves, so he thinks he can make up his own narrative to support his fabricated holy war.
@Gene – If you are one of Limbaugh’s “20 million” listeners, would there be anything wrong with doing a quick, free internet search to find out the truth about the LRA? If Rush is telling the truth, there are surely other sources out there to back it up. Would it hurt anything?
If the thought of finding other sources to back up Rush’s claims scares you or gives you pause – that should be a HUGE red flag.
And as far as his “20 million” listeners:
Radio counts listeners in quarter hour increments. There are two ways of measuring them: “cume” and “average quarter hours” (AQH). They’re just what they sound like: total number of quarter-hours listened and average listeners in a quarter hour.
The numbers put out by people like Rush are weekly cume. The trick with cume is that if you listen for 15 minutes, you’re one listener. Listen for a half hour, you’re two. The full hour, four, and so on.
If most of Rush’s listeners join his show at the top and listen to all three hours, each of those people counts as 12 listeners every day. If they listen all week long, then each of those people counts as 60 listeners.
See how quickly numbers get inflated?
Even without factoring in “Best of Rush” and weekend/overnight replays, the real number of people actually listening to Rush (if you buy his 20 million argument, which was at his PEAK, not necessarily now) is closer to 350,000 to half a million people. Out of a country of 350 million.
In other words, only one tenth of one percent of the population of the United States listens to Rush Limbaugh.
And that one tenth of one percent is controlling the policy of the Republican Party.
Think about it.

In my part of the world, people say Americans are stupid. I wholeheartedly disagree. Some Americans are stupid, as well as some Europeans, some Australians, some Ugandans, some Chinese etc. It’s just a shame that those stupid Americans have such a loud voice, that reaches the ends of the World, namely Australia, where I am from. It’s also a shame that intelligent, well spoken Americans like you have such a quiet voice, that only reaches as far as people who are willing to do a google search on this news and pick item number 10.
This man, Rush Limbaugh, was on the radio here twice today for being so stupid. I hope to see people like you get air play for being intelligent.
Gene • Oct 24, 2011 at 11:08 pm
Well, if Foreign Policy Magazine and their readership of 3 says so then they must be right. Limbaugh and his 20 million listeners must be wrong. Not too blinded are ya?

You missed another point. The LRA isn’t fighting Muslims of any sort. They’re fighting animists and other Christians, and in fact being funded by the dangerous radically Islamist government of Khartoum.

Good example of hatred blinding the truth Rush. WOW! Uganda, good idea. I don’t think Rio Linda would have him. LOL

Brilliant piece, Artur. I hope you work to publicize it widely. You’ve touched on a key element in my own work: the hijacking of political dialogue by the extreme rhetoric of those who hold the microphones. This example of Limbaugh’s is classic RW rhetoric, where he cherry-picks “truth” to support a pre-conceived ideology, but it’s also far too common across the board.
