Sports news web site bleacherreport.com’s Geoffrey Tanner named the Minuteman Marching Band among the six best college athletics bands in the nation.
It’s that time of the year again, when college students everywhere are done with midterms and aching to get out of their sleepy hometowns and off to warm beaches rife with scantily clad beachgoers. On a poor college kid’s budget, how are they supposed to afford this trip? Here’s an idea - pile a bunch of friends together in a car and head out!
The Massachusetts men’s basketball team will play third-seeded Richmond in Atlantic City after upsetting sixth-seeded Charlotte on Tuesday night. The Minutemen will attempt to upset another team in the Spiders who already appear to have a spot in the upcoming NCAA tournament.
Last week, the Massachusetts state legislature’s Joint Committee on the Judiciary heard testimony on Senate bill no. 1801, “An Act to Regulate and Tax the Cannabis Industry.” The hearing for the bill, written and brought forth by Richard M. Evans, of Northampton, Mass., marked the second time in less than six months the legislature heard testimony on the subject.

Despite bringing in five freshmen and having a rebuilding year, the Massachusetts men’s basketball team won its first Atlantic 10 tournament game since 2002 behind Ricky Harris. The senior has led the Minutemen all season and continues to perform well in the playoffs, not wanting to play his last game in a UMass uniform.

On a whirlwind tour of downtown Northampton eateries, there are five places right on Main Street that simply can’t be missed: Local Burger, Amanouz Café, Spoleto, Fitzwilly’s and Ben and Bill’s Chocolate Emporium. Each offers a unique flavor that can’t be found anywhere else. This week the Daily Collegian got a chance to sample these fine places to chow down. In a college town, it’s essential to know where the best places are to take a date out, grab a bite or maybe just hang out and relax.

Grammy-winning Irish band The Chieftains along with their leader Paddy Moloney came to the Fine Arts Center Wednesday night. Even without the luck of the Irish, the Chieftans played their traditional reels and jigs with spirit.

The Massachusetts hockey team gets a chance at redemption when it faces Boston College at Conte Forum for a best-of-three series in the opening round of the Hockey East tournament. The Eagles defeated the Minutemen in all three of their regular season meetings, with UMass failing to score more than a single goal in each contest.

During spring break week, the Massachusetts men’s lacrosse team will host Harvard and Providence as it looks to improve its 3-1 season record. The Minutemen will rely on their offense which ranks second in the nation in scoring with 15.67 goals per game, while the Friars have scored 10 total goals in their first two games.

After breaking its three-game losing streak in its four-game homestand, the Massachusetts women’s lacrosse team will face its first long road trip of the season. The Minutewomen will face Stony Brook this Saturday before remaining in New York to take on Albany the following weekend.
