As the Massachusetts field hockey team picked up its first two A-10 victories over the past week, the accolades have begun to come in.
This past Sunday, goalie Ashley Egland was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week and freshman forward Ashley Gilbert was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week for their performances against Providence, West Chester and La Salle.
“We had some players have outstanding performances this weekend, so it’s nice to be recognized,” said head coach Patty Shea.
Over the week, Egland, an Ilion, N.Y. native, played as good as she ever has, posting a jaw-dropping 0.28 goals against average and a .964 save percentage.
Against Providence on Wednesday, the sophomore netkeeper kept the Friars scoreless for two halves and two overtime periods before finally succumbing in strokes, as the Minutewomen lost 1-0.
In conference play against LaSalle, Egland made a solid six saves as her team picked up the 2-1 victory, but her finest performance of the week came in shutting down West Chester, netting a career-high 15 saves while simultaneously keeping the opposition scoreless.
“Ashley had one of the best games of her career,” Shea said of Egland’s effort against the Golden Rams. “She took care of everything they threw at her on our end of the field.”
Gilbert, on the other hand, was the offensive star of the week, posting game-winning goals in both of UMass’ conference games. Against West Chester, the Turner, Maine native drilled home both Maroon and White scores, for her first ever multiple-goal game.
With the three scores, Gilbert moved up to a tie for second on the Minutewomen with four goals. This was the second Rookie of the Week nod that the 5-foot-10 scoring machine has garnered this season.
“I just keep raising the bar for myself,” Gilbert said. “I try to perfect my game every time out there.”
