Both the Massachusetts men’s and women’s track teams had stellar performances Saturday at Boston University, as they were each able to pick up first place finishes against six other teams.
For the women, freshman phenom Brandy Green was the star, as she used a first place performance in the 55-meter high hurdles (8.4 seconds) and a second place honor in the pole vault (10’6.00″) to easily outscore Bentley (a mere two points) by herself.
Another important contributor to the cause was Marissa Callahan, who garnered a first place finish in the triple jump with a leap of 35’6.00″. Christina Bizon (second place in the weight throw) and Christina Huff (third place in the 200-meter dash) also scored points for the Maroon and White.
Overall on the day, UMass was able to pick up 59.50 points, easily good enough to out-distance second place finisher Maine (44.50 points). Rounding out the top three was New Hampshire (38 points), while host BU struggled to a mere 21.
For the men, Kwesi F. Boatengin (55-meter dash), Mike Howell (400-meter dash), Dave McMenamy (800-meter run), Eric Uliano (shot put) and Ken Shneider (pole vault) all won their respective events to lead their team to victory.
Boatengin especially shined, finishing the 55-meter dash in an upstanding 6.2 seconds.
Overall, the men’s team was able to do even more damage than the women’s team, totaling 68.50 points to UNH’s 41.5. Bentley, on the other hand, struggled mightily again, to the tune of a mere one point.
The Maroon and White now has a long hiatus before returning to action in the middle of January. The Minutemen will travel back to BU to compete in the New England Challenge Cup on January 18 while the Minutewomen will next compete against Brown University on January 19 in Providence, Rhode Island.
