Tuesday Nov. 12, 2002
1:33 a.m.: An explosion was reported on the south side of John Adams Dormitory on Fearing Street. The responding officer reported that an explosion did happen, but that there was no evidence on the ground.
2:44 a.m.: A medical emergency was reported on Sunset Avenue. The Amherst Fire Department (AFD) reported one person to Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
7:10 a.m.: Police entered a room on the seventh floor of Kennedy Dormitory on Massachusetts Avenue with a warrant searching for a laptop stolen last April. Upon entering the room, the officers discovered a wide variety of drug paraphernalia in the room. They arrested Steven Y. Nguyen, 19, for receiving stolen property valued at more than $250 (the laptop), possession of a Class D substance, and possession of a Class D substance with intent to distribute. They also arrested Yuta Nakamura, 22, of Singapore for possession of a Class D substance.
After returning with a second warrant, police confiscated a large quantity of marijuana, numerous drug paraphernalia items and $24,000 in cash. The drug bust is the biggest in terms of cash in the last 30 years of the University.
9:20 p.m.: A caller reported that her pocketbook was stolen while was in Hampshire DC on Southwest Circle. The pocketbook contained a wallet with $60, a license, a debit card, a room key, a phone book and a Ucard.
10:17 p.m.: A resident in Washington Dormitory reported an attempted breaking and entering. Damage was noted to the door near the lock.
Wednesday Nov. 13.
2:14 p.m.: Police responded to a report of a possible stalking in Paige Laboratory on Holdsworth Way.
4:15 p.m.: A wallet was reported stolen from Brett Dormitory. The wallet contained a small amount of money and credit cards.
11:45 p.m.: The report of a suspicious vehicle near Alumni Stadium resulted in an area check. The responding officer found a vehicle with three occupants and a small amount of marijuana in it. A summons for court was issued.
Thursday Nov. 14
1:55 a.m.: A noise complaint was reported in Mary Lyon Dormitory on Eastman Lane. The RA reported that there are two males and one female that refused to leave the building. He called back and said that he escorted the people out of the building.
2:32 a.m.: An officer stated that a BB gun was seized and a trespass was issued in the Southwest Mall. The subject in possession of the gun was escorted off campus.
3:53 a.m.: A caller stated that she could see two males slashing bike tires outside of Kennedy Dormitory on Massachusetts Avenue. The suspects were identified.
7:41 a.m.: A caller reported that someone was on the very top of the water tower near Lot 49 on Orchard Hill. The student climbed the tower to watch the sun rise. Information from the incident will go to the dean of students.
9:20 a.m.: A medical emergency was reported in Dwight Dormitory on Eastman Lane. An ambulance was dispatched and transported one person to Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
12:31 p.m.: James Moore was arrested in Dickinson Hall on Hicks Way for a rape that occurred on Sept. 29, 2002 at a Southwest residence hall.
2:09 p.m.: A laptop computer was reported found in a trashcan near the Physical Plant Building on Campus Center Way. The caller was advised to bring the laptop to UMPD so it could be determined if the laptop was previously stolen.
2:20 p.m.: A report of fraudulent credit card use was reported from Mackimmie Dormitory on Sunset Avenue.
5:24 p.m.: Chung Yin Lo, 22, of 15 Beach St., Boston was arrested on Commonwealth Avenue on an outstanding warrant.
Friday Nov. 15
3:05 a.m.: A traffic stop on Massachusetts Avenue resulted in the arrest of Erik I. Diamond, 20, of 63 East 3rd St. in Brooklyn, NY. Diamond was charged with speeding, no possession of a license, and operating under the influence of alcohol.
10:12 a.m.: Police stopped a speeding car on Campus Center Way, resulting in the arrest of male Shrewsbury resident. He was charged with operating with a revoked license and speeding.
12:58 p.m.: A caller reported that she parked her vehicle in Lot 12 on Forestry Way at around 9 a.m. When she came back, the driver’s side window was smashed and the CD player was taken.
1:05 p.m.: Police arrested Yuta Nakamura, 22, of 1040 N. Pleasant St. in Amherst on an outstanding warrant while he was in the Whitmore Administration Building on Presidents Drive.
1:44 p.m.: Vandalism was reported to four cars in Lot 22 on University Drive. All four vehicles had a window smashed out with damage to the center console and the stereo stolen.
5:16 p.m.: A subject was reported waving a cane around like it was a sword in the Campus Center. The responding officer reported that the subject will be leaving campus.
8:56 p.m.: A caller reported that fog lights and a gas can were taken from his vehicle in the past week while it was parked in Lot 44 on Sylvan Drive.
11:52 p.m.: A caller reported that a male was assaulted and robbed by three other males in Washington Dormitory on Fearing Street. The officer on the scene requested for an ambulance for the victim, who was struck in the head with a beer bottle. The victim was transported to Cooley Dickinson Hospital. The suspect, Anthony Giallanzo, 21, of 27 1st Avenue in East Islip, New York, refused medical treatment and was charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and with unarmed robbery.
Saturday Nov. 16
1:43 a.m.: A disturbance was reported in Lincoln Apartments on Lincoln Avenue. An officer reported that he will be out with a male and female having an argument.
2:01 a.m.: Police responded to drug law offenses in Moore Dormitory on Southwest Circle. Thomas John Olson, 19, of 112 Thatcher Rd. in Rockport, Mass. and Rory David Higgins, 18, of 6 Hodgkins St. in Gloucester, Mass. were arrested and charged with possession of a Class D substance, marijuana.
2:10 a.m.: A vending machine was reported smashed in Cance Dormitory on Fearing Street. An RA reported that she contacted Emergency Housing because there was plastic all over the floor.
3:21 a.m.: Amherst Police forwarded a report of a suspicious person near the Fine Arts Center on Presidents Drive. APD reported that a caller stated seeing an individual dressed up like Spiderman. UMass police responded and sent Spiderman on his way.
4:13 a.m.: Officers investigated a broken window in John Quincy Adams Dormitory on Fearing Street with blood around it. Emergency Housing was sent to the location. The officer reported that he will be heading to University Microfilm International to check on the residents. A resident stated that his roommate fell into the window.
Vandalism was reported to a car in Lot 32 E on Massachusetts Avenue. Damage to the passenger side window, passenger side mirror, drivers side mirror and antenna were reported. Four traffic cones were found in between several nearby parked cars.
2:20 p.m.: An RA in Brown Dormitory on Eastman Lane reported an assault and battery. The victim was in the cluster office at the time of the call. An officer was dispatched and took the victim to the station to fill out a report.
10:29 p.m.: Death threats were reported to be made to a student in Grayson Dormitory on Orchard Hill Drive. The incident is under investigation.
11:53 p.m.: A domestic disturbance was reported in Lot 32 W on Massachusetts Avenue. Police arrested Ryan J. Sweeney, 19, of 118A George St. in Medford, Mass., and charged him with assault and battery.
Sunday Nov. 17
3:10 a.m.: Police responded to a report that someone had slashed tires on three vehicles near John Adams Dormitory on Fearing Street.
3:30 a.m.: An intoxicated person near the Malcolm X Center on Southwest Circle was taken by ambulance to Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
4:04 a.m.: A caller reported that four students took the soda machine from Cance Dormitory on Fearing Street. The responding officer stated that
the machine was put back.
10:44 a.m.: A medical emergency was reported to in Butterfield Dormitory on Clark Hill Road. AFD transported one person to Cooley Dickinson Hospital.
