Wells out with injury

BOSTON (AP) — Red Sox left-hander David Wells will go on the 15-day disabled list after he sprained his right foot in Monday’s 8-4 loss to Baltimore.

Manager Terry Francona said Tuesday that Wells could be out for more than a month.

He injured the foot in the fourth inning as he tried to field Javier Lopez’s slow roller. He hobbled back to the mound but remained in the game for five more batters before leaving.

Left-hander John Halama will take Wells’ spot in the rotation and start next Tuesday in Detroit. Lenny DiNardo will be recalled from Triple-A Pawtucket and replace Halama in the bullpen.

Wells (2-3) gave up six runs and eight hits in 3 2-3 innings on Monday. He entered the game with a 15-inning scoreless string over his past two starts, both Boston shutouts.
