ISOM unveils new dean

After months of searching, the Isenberg School of Management at the University of Massachusetts has hired a new interim dean.

Dr. Anthony “Tony” Butterfield, who has served as director for the Isenberg doctoral program for over 10 years and has taught UMass business students since 1972, will succeed former interim dean Soren Bisgaard for the position. Butterfield was hired on Sept. 1 and is set to serve for two years in the position.

“The Isenberg School has outstanding students, faculty, staff and alumni,” said Butterfield.

The search for a new dean began at the end of the spring 2007 semester when Bisgaard announced he would like to return to teaching Integrative Studies at ISOM, effectively resigning his post. Since then, the office of the Provost reviewed several candidates and decided upon Butterfield.

Butterfield earned his doctorate and master’s degrees in psychology from the University of Michigan in 1963 and 1968, respectively. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Yale University in 1961.

The new dean has also been published in several publications, including Journal of Management, Personnel Psychology, Handbook of Gender and Work and Academy of Management Journal.

“It will be an honor and a labor of love to work the school, campus, business and alumni communities to move the school further ahead in our pursuit of excellence,” said Butterfield. “The students and Commonwealth deserve nothing less.”
