Relationships with Dance Beam at the Hampshire College Winter Dance Concert

Aspirations and dreams derive from a variety of different aspects of life. Such life experiences include relationships. Relationships between people, objects, places and ideas. These provide an outlet for individualism among a joint society.

February 21-23 the visions of ten student choreographers of Hampshire College created pieces for the annual Hampshire College Winter Dance Concert that showcased the concept of relationships through dance. While providing an escape into the transcendental power of dance, the performances showcased the talents of students of the Five College Dance department in a deep look into the tangible and intangible relationships one encounters on life’s journeys.

The performance took place at Hampshire College’s Studio Dance Theatre. An intimate space provided a greater connection between the audience and the performers, further enhancing the nights’ theme of exploration of relationships.

From the opening act to the closing, the performances last weekend created an accurate glimpse into the achievements of the department’s dancers. The background set and technology for the show proved to be more advanced than expected in such a small nonprofessional space.

Lighting in such pieces as Noelle Serafino’s “Exer(OR)cise It!” enhanced the overall dance experience and instigated a specific reaction from the audience. Her look into the superstitions of everyday life proved that a superstition truly is simply the repetition of the ordinary. Opening with incessant shaking of separate body parts and hitting the floor transitioned into repetitious choreography under the guidance of Stevie Wonder and his song “Superstition,” Noelle Serafino successfully expressed Twyla Tharp’s notion that “
