In No. 3 John Hopkins’ 17-6 rout over Albany 14 different players recorded at least one point for the Blue Jays.
John Hopkins (9-1) was on top early, 3-1, at the start of the second quarter, but the game exploded with a 4-0 run for the Blue Jays, giving them a 7-1 lead going into halftime
As it did the first two periods, John Hopkins netted a goal in the first minute into the third quarter, then added two more scores before the seven minute, seven second mark of the third. Before long, the Blue Jays held a hefty 10-1 lead.
The Great Danes (2-8, 2-0 American East) ended a 24-minute scoreless drought at the 7:07 mark of the third with a goal by sophomore attacker Ty Thompson. After John Hopkins answered with another goal 41 seconds later, Albany attempted a run of their own with three consecutive goals, cutting the Blue Jays’ lead to 11-5 late in the third.
John Hopkins crushed the Great Danes’ dreams of capping the comeback with two minutes left in the third as it closed out the frame with two more goals to take a commanding 13-5 advantage.
The Blue Jays outscored Albany 4-1 in the fourth quarter, as they coasted to a 17-6 victory.
No. 5 Cornell downs Harvard in Ivy League battle
With a balanced attack, No. 5 Cornell outlasted Harvard (5-5, 2-1 Ivy) 14-10, as eleven different players found the back of the net.
After the first quarter, the Big Red (8-1, 4-0 Ivy League) held a modest 2-1 lead. Cornell’s defense clamped down in the second quarter as the Crimson couldn’t produce a goal.
The Big Red attack feasted on Harvard’s defense, however, as they netted four more goals, giving them a 6-1 lead going into halftime.
Both teams traded goals early in the third, as Cornell pushed its lead to 9-3. Harvard responded with a three-goal run, but the Big Red answered back with 46 seconds into the fourth with a goal of their own to make it a 9-6 game.
The Crimson relentlessly attempted to cut the lead down, cutting it to three on two different occasions at 11-8 and 12-9, but Cornell answered back as they had all game.
The Big Red closed the game out with a 2-1 run, giving them the 14-10 win.
Harvard is back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it hosts Quinnipiac. Next up for Cornell is a home game against Brown on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Loyola remains undefeated with comeback win over No. 14 Fairfield
Per usual, No. 4 Loyola found its second wind as it pulled off the 8-6 comeback victory over No. 14 Fairfield on Saturday.
The win clinched a spot for the Greyhounds (10-0, 4-0 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference) in the ECAC Championships and gave them their highest win total since 2001.
With the game tied at four in the fourth quarter, the Stags (9-2, 2-1 ECAC) scored back-to-back goals to take a 6-4 lead with 11:54 left to play. But Loyola reeled off a 4-0 run to close the game to grab the victory.
Loyola took over the game early as its defense was on point, coupled with an equally impressive offensive showing.
The Greyhounds took a 3-0 lead early in the second. The Stags (9-2, 2-1 ECAC) finally found the back of the net at the 6:01 mark of the second, but Loyola scored again 3:09 later to give it a 4-1 lead.
Fairfield found holes in the Greyhound defense just 26 seconds later, scoring two goals to give Loyola a minimal two-goal cushion going into the half.
The Stags found the two goals they needed early in the third quarter to tie the game at four.
