Showing little sign of fatigue after its second match in as many days, the Massachusetts tennis team defeated Binghamton 6-1 at home on Sunday.
The Minutewomen (9-2) continued their doubles dominance by sweeping the Bearcats to collect the doubles point for the match. The doubles victory was highlighted by an 8-0 shutout by No. 3 Jessica Podlofsky and No. 4 Arielle Griffin over Binghamton’s (3-8) Sara Kohtz and Missy Edelblum. UMass coach Judy Dixon praised both Podlofsky and Griffin, who have combined to win 80 percent of their matches this season.
“The three and the four positions are really doing the job for us,” Dixon said. “(Podlofsky) has always been the workhorse of the team and now combined with Arielle, they really give us a solid middle of the lineup.”
With the victory, the Minutewomen remain perfect in doubles play, winning all 11 possible doubles points.
Dixon believed the doubles victory set the tone for the rest of the match, saying “Psychologically, it’s huge for us, and in terms of taking the pressure off the singles lineup it’s also huge.”
UMass’ momentum carried into the singles play, where Podlofsky and Griffin both continued their hot play with straight-set victories. Sonia Bokhari, Chanel Glasper, and Jocelyn Providence also won in straight sets. The lone Bearcats point was collected by Katherine Medianik, who defeated Yuliana Motyl in a tiebreaker set, 6-1.
The Minutewomen have now won three matches in a row, and six of their last seven. They will travel to Ohio this weekend to face Xavier on Friday and Dayton on Saturday.
Minutewomen Defeat Fordham in Conference Face-off
The Minutewomen maintained their perfect conference record while also avenging a bitter loss from last year by defeating Fordham 6-1 in the weekend opener on Saturday.
UMass dominated doubles play, sweeping the Rams to take the doubles point. The No. 1 duo of Motyl and Chantal Swiszcz faced the toughest challenge, edging out Fordham’s pair of Amy Simidian and Sarah Ali 8-7.
The match tightened in singles play, as three of the six matches went to a tie-break set. Swiszcz delivered the final point, closing out the scoring with a third-set victory over Anika Novacek 7-6, 3-6, 10-7. Glasper and Griffin also won their matches during the tie-break set.
Dixon praised the mettle displayed by her starting lineup, especially in the singles portion of the event.
“One of the things we talk to the kids about is closing and it’s one of the things we still need to work on,” she said. “Everything that could have gone our way, went our way.”
Dixon also emphasized the importance of defending the home court, especially against quality talent, saying “For us, you can’t underestimate the power of playing at home. The only team we’ve lost to over the last four years at home was Boston College.”
A year ago, UMass traveled to Fordham where the squad received its only conference loss all season. Dixon said she made the team “sit and watch Fordham’s celebration” to help drive home the importance of a future rematch.
Now, with a spotless A-10 record, the Minutewomen must look ahead.
“Our goal is to get to the A-10 final,” Dixon said. “We’re in good shape right now, our confidence level is high and, frankly, if we can get through Xavier, we’ll be in good shape.”
