The University of Massachusetts campus and community were informed of the death of a Ph.D. student by email Wednesday afternoon.

According to an email from Associate Vice-Chancellor and Interim-Dean of Students David  Vaillancourt, Ayaan Agane was a Ph.D. student in English and previously earned a master’s degree in the department in 2011. Agane taught College Writing and served as a Graduate Teaching Associate in the UMass Writing Program.

“On behalf of UMass, we extend our sincere condolences to Ayaan’s family and friends,” Vaillancourt wrote.

Agane passed away on September 1. The email does not include a cause of death.
