The Massachusetts men’s basketball team will be gaining a player for a change.
UMass football quarterback Randall West will walk-on to the men’s basketball team for the final six games of the 2017-18 season, according to UMass Athletics.
The addition comes a week after Chris Baldwin elected to have surgery on his injured quad, ending his season. And days after Khalea Turner-Morris was ruled out of Wednesday’s game vs. George Washington with a concussion.
Until Turner-Morris is cleared, the Minutemen will only be fielding five scholarship players, Luwane Pipkins, Carl Pierre, C.J. Anderson, Malik Hines and Unique McLean.
Rayshawn Miller, a walk-on, has been an integral part to the Minutemen’s lineup this season, and Jaylen Franklin, also a walk-on, has seen some minutes in recent games.
The Minutemen also have the option to play Michael Gillespie who walked-on earlier this season.
West was on his varsity basketball team at Lawrenceville High School in Moorestown, New Jersey.
Listed at 6-foot-4, West will wear No. 41.
For UMass football in 2017, West saw very limited action in two games vs. Mississippi State and Georgia Southern.
