Hockey drops two to No. 7 Colorado College

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Sometimes things just aren’t as they seem.

The Massachusetts hockey team played a dismal game on Friday night, as it fell to Colorado College in a lackluster game 3-0. The Minutemen then improved their play significantly on Saturday, only to fall to the No. 7 Tigers (2-2) by a lopsided 7-1 score.

On the weekend, the Maroon and White special teams were a mixed bag. The penalty kill was nowhere near as bad as it looked on paper, as it allowed four power play goals, but fell victim to some bad breaks and some strong effort from its opponent.

“On Friday, the one thing that was a real plus was that we completely shut them down on the power play,” UMass Head Coach Don Cahoon said. “We bothered them with a press, we angled well and we didn’t give them good opportunities. We took their power play and completely neutralized it. Saturday, if we had been able to give the same effort, the score would have been very different.”

The power play struggled as a whole, going 0-for-6 for the weekend and producing a minimal number of chances.

“On the first night, we were so exhausted from playing in our end that we were just too fatigued with our personnel to be able to execute,” Cahoon said. “Saturday, on a couple of the power plays, we moved the puck really well and had couple of chances, but it wasn’t executed to the degree we needed to.”

Saturday’s contest was a vicious one for the Minutemen, as they were called for 12 penalties for 51 minutes, including a five-minute major and a game misconduct, assessed to sophomore Mike Warner for hitting from behind, as well as two 10-minute misconducts which were given to juniors Tim Turner and Jimmy Callahan.

“There’s no room for that. It’s a matter of frustration, discipline and maturity,” Cahoon said. “Those are three areas that have to be underscored in the growth and development of the program.”

The Tigers jumped on freshman goaltender Tim Warner early, with Alex Kim netting a pair of goals on the man advantage. The first came at the 3:35 mark of the first, when a Mark Cullen shot found its way through a screen and Kim slapped home the rebound. The second occurred slightly more than 11 minutes later, when Kim teed up a one-timer off a shifty pass from defenseman Tom Preissing.

Colorado College added to its lead in the second on tallies by Colin Stuart and sophomore sensation Peter Sejna, the latter of which rattled off both the skates of UMass captain Toni S
