Another bad Bulger brother in trouble for talking with Whitey

Federal investigators arrested John “Jackie” Bulger on Friday on charges of perjury before a federal grand jury investigating his brother, fugitive James “Whitey” Bulger. Both Bulgers are the brothers of William Bulger, president of the University of Massachusetts and former president of the Massachusetts State Senate.

Jackie was charged with two incidents of perjury and obstruction of justice dating from 1996 when he told the jury that he had not heard from his brother since he fled custody in 1995. The Federal Bureau of Investigation now claims to have evidence that indicates Whitey had indeed contacted his brother in 1996 through another individual.

He also told the jury in 1996 that he was not aware of the fact that Whitey had a safety deposit box in Clearwater, Fla. Contradicting evidence has now surfaced to indicate that Jackie had paid rent to the box that was opened four years earlier.

Bulger appeared in front of a Boston federal magistrate briefly Friday and was released on a $10,000 bond. His arraignment is scheduled for tomorrow where he could face, if found guilty, a maximum sentence of five years of prison time for perjury and 10 years of jail time for obstruction of justice. Both charges could bring up to a $250,000 fine.

James “Whitey” Bulger is currently on the FBI’s most wanted list and is wanted for racketeering, 18 counts of murder, conspiracy to commit murder, extortion, money laundering and narcotics distribution. He was known for running the Somerville Winter Hill gang.

The FBI is offering a one million dollar reward to anyone who has any information that could lead to the capture of Whitey.

“James J. Bulger is being sought for his role in numerous murders committed from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s in connection with his leadership of an organized crime group that allegedly controlled extortion, drug deals and other illegal activities in the Boston, Massachusetts area,” the Official FBI website states. “He has a violent temper and is known to carry a knife at all times.”

Reports indicate that Bulger has been traveling with his girlfriend Catherine Greig to such places as New York, Louisiana, Mexico and Mississippi but it is unknown as to where they are now. The duo has been traveling with a considerable amount of money at their disposal and has managed to evade police capture.

The FBI is continuing their investigation into his whereabouts, tracing calls made by the fugitive to the Boston area.

UMass president William Bulger’s tenure as senate president was the longest in state history and he has had a 35-year-career as a state legislator. Attempts to tap his telephone were thwarted by an informant at Bell Atlantic in 1999 as were attempts to tap the telephone lines of his brothers. William Bulger maintains that he has had no contact with his brother since his 1995 disappearance.
