Deren earns several honors for last weekend’s performance

As the Massachusetts men’s soccer team continues to annihilate its Atlantic 10 opposition, its most prolific scorer and one of the most dominant players in the conference was recognized this week for another impressive performance.

The Minutemen’s Jeff Deren, from nearby Chicopee, picked up three awards to add to his already wildly successful season. Deren was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week by the Conference Commissioner’s Office, as well as being named WHMP/UMass Co-Athlete of the Week.

The junior also was chosen to the Soccer America Team of the Week, the first member of the Maroon and White to receive the honor on the season. Deren’s WHMP honor follows the selection of teammate Ptah Myers as last week’s winner of the award.

The crafty junior racked up two goals and two assists on the weekend, leading the Minutemen to two more victories and keeping the team’s winning streak alive. Deren tallied the game-winner and assisted on two other scores in UMass’ 3-1 triumph against Richmond on Friday. He also picked up another game-winner against George Washington on Sunday, a 2-1 Minutemen victory, as his team improved to 13-3 on the season, and 8-1 in the Atlantic 10.

Deren leads the conference in scoring this year, as he has put home 12 goals and has assisted on five more. The 5’10” forward took home the team scoring title last year as well, becoming the first sophomore to do so in seven years.

The Minutemen look to improve on their nine-game winning streak, tied for the longest in school history, Friday night when they travel to the Buckeye State to clash with Dayton.
